Yep. Apparently the news on Zomg is that they're not doing anything else with it and are shelving it.

Well, seeing as I just read Environmental Unity's Topic in the GCD about half an hour ago, the news is still pretty fresh and I haven't yet really managed to sort it out.
Needless to say, I came straight to the z!F to not only get greater detail, but to see how my fellow zOMGaians were taking the news, and through them, gain a better understanding of exactly what this all means for zOMG!

Imagine my surprise to find almost nothing! No outrage, no empassioned debate, no analysis. Just the odd observance here and there.

Not to be overly dramatic about it, but for me personally, reading the news had an actual physical impact that I felt in my chest.
The same sort of thing that I feel when I'm struck with sudden and unexpectedly bad news about someone I know and care about, and I'm surprised to find the z!F so still and calm.

Is it possible that people just haven't heard the news yet, or that people have resigned themselves to zOMG!'s ineveitable demise?
Or perhaps it's that the passionate zOMG! Community is simply too shocked and hurt to discuss it yet.
I don't know.

All I know is that, the way I see it, this is the end of zOMG!
Sure it'll stay up and running for a while, but inevitably, what resources it has now will be directed elsewhere, the game will be neglected and ultimately, be seen as requiring more than it is worth to even maintain.
One day we'll get a Dev Notice that, like some other neglected and under utilized features on the site, zOMG! will have developed more issues than Gaia can rationalize repairing, the plug will be pulled, and zOMG! will die a sad and ignoble death, with only a few remaining stalwarts left to mourn it.

I think I might actually cry... crying .

zOMG! is what brought me to Gaia a little over two years ago, and despite it's limitations, glitches and seemingly never-ending dance upon the precipice, it has been what kept me here.
It's sly and sweet humour still appeals to me after countless hours spent roaming it's varied and lush environs, it's soundtrack as familiar to me now as the songs of my youth that I still retreat to when confronted by the discordance that is what popular music has become.

Sure there are other games out there.

But they're not zOMG!

Nothing else I've seen advertised has captured my imagination, and while pretty, I doubt that "High Fantasy" will prove any different.

After having spent the vast majority of my long (compared to the avergae Gaian's) life, eschewing gaming, I found something that fit me perfectly, and made me understand why gaming can be such an impactful element in people's lives.
zOMG!, is not just a game, it's a Community. One that, like any community, has it's good and it's bad, but unlike many communities, has a passionate, involved and devoted following, that would make any political leader drool with envy.
Ever since the beginning of the end, a little over a year ago, this Community has come together and worked tirelessly to save their game. To save their home.
They've organised drives, Events and letter writing campaigns, and spent, spent, spent, in order to prove zOMG!'s financial viability, and just when it seemed that their ardor and faith were to be rewarded, right in the midst of the annual Love-Fest that is the Gaia Anniversary, the rug is pulled out from underneath them.
I can't help but feel betrayed. That all of the time, money and love that I and others have directed at saving zOMG! has been callously ignored, and that, in some way, we were being used as a test demographic.
If a small batch of dedicated users could generate as much money as we did, just imagine how much more could be made if a similar game could be made available to the massive audience that facebook can offer.
I can see the rationale, but I suspect that the tall foreheads at Gaia HQ may be disappointed when they find that the average FB user has the attention span of a humming bird, and the loyalty of a Gaian Executive.

Anyways, a quick proof-reading of what I've written so far, shows that I am on the verge of building an insurmountable wall of text, so, as is my wont, I will leave my final thoughts on the matter in the form of a poem.
My thanks to any who get this far.

Eulogy for a Friend

The King is dead.
Long live the King.
Make free your Pets
And Salvage your Rings
Redeem your Orbs for a piece of Gold
Assaults on The Keep, for e'er withhold.

Fond dreams of new adventures, passed
Our noble friend has breathed his last.
So don your shroud, a sad dirge sing.
The King is dead.
Long Live the King.

Good idea, broken by poor design then broken further by the gold issue, now thrown out to die since its too embarrassing for Gaia to tolerate. Somehow, I doubt the next incarnation will be any better.

read this! So one way to have developers back in zOMG is to boycott facebook games?
read the last sentence i bolded.

[JK]
You have to remember that it took a team of nearly 20 people 3 years to develop this game

Yeah, a huge number of people have contributed at various points. I'm sure it's even more than 20. This includes managers, quality assurance, sound effects, music composition, system administrators, public relations, and more. However, most of these were not full time on zOMG. Resources like PR, marketing, accounting, etc are shared among the entire company. Even most of our art resources were shared. To the best of my knowledge, the only artists who were fulltime on zOMG were JK and mavdoc. Qixter was the director/producer of the project and technically the only employees directly under his control were the engineers and game designers.

As for 3 years, perhaps JK is counting some of the post-launch features like mini-bosses. It was definitely not 3 years from start to launch. There was plenty of concept art that existed throughout Gaia's history. But prior to September 2006 the only bit of art or code which existed and is now in the game was the OMG monster. Flajeu and myself started in September and November of that year. Around that time mavdoc, peppertea, and reapersun also started. Qixter was hired in early 2007 and finished building out the team. The game was released in Oct 2008.

Quote:
As I said at the outset of my Post, I'm no programmer, and unfortunately, I'm also not someone with any real insight into the workings of Gaia HQ.
I'm just another user who loves this game and this Community; a user who, like so many zOMGaians, is struggling with the realization that the game which has come to mean so much to me faces a slow and lingering "Death by a thousand cuts".

Strangely enough though, as much as your response clarifies certain things, it also makes the whole issue of zOMG!'s shelving that much mmore confusing.

For me at least, my understanding (or perhaps more correctly, mis-understanding) of [JK]'s Topic made the whole thing make a certain kind of sense. The way I read it was that zOMG! was difficult and expensive to maintian and upgrade due to it's dependency upon older tech. That, no matter how much it made through incresed sales of Powerups etc., it could never rationalize the resources required to keep it alive and growing.
Your statement would seem to refute that notion entirely, and imply that with as little as one or two dedicated Developers, it could not only survive, but actually thrive and realize much of it's potential.
So I'm afraid I am back to being mystified as to the thought processes of a management team who would make the decisons regarding zOMG! that they continually seem to make.
I refuse to believe that zOMG! isn't making money. I honestly believe anybody would have to be an idiot to believe that based on the activities of the last year.
I know I personally have dropped a bomb on zOMG since the troubles began, and based on the number of Powerups and Pets I see being used in zOMG!, I have to believe that many others have as well.
So what I'm left with is that zOMG! is not making enough money; that Management has decided that there are far easier and less resource intensive means by which to part Gaians from their cash, and because cash is King, zOMG!, and we loyal zOMGaians aren't worth the effort.
That's kind of depressing.

Good points. As for development cost, yes I do believe 1 or 2 devs can make an impact. Look at DMS! That happened even with just a couple devs and some of Pan's time in addition to the art (JK would know how long that took). But that can't really happen unless we have some time to focus on it. I was in the middle of work for Monster Galaxy when DMS started and eventually managed to get some dedicated time for it. But without some amount of dedicated time, updates can't happen.

As for the main part of your comment, two very important things:

First, it's not about who is worth what. zOMGaians are priceless, believe me =)

Second, money. I don't think anyone disagrees that if we spent more time on zOMG we could make more money. Enough to pay for the resources necessary? Depends how you look at it. To the best of my knowledge zOMG made more in 2011 than the salary and server costs involved in the work done for zOMG. Enough right? But resources at a company are not valued based on their costs; rather they're valued by the investment potential. If Gaia sees a chance to strike it big with a facebook or iphone game that requires my programming or JK's art, the benefit from zOMG revenue has to be weighed against potential growth in the other project. The difficulty is that zOMG may be a reliable way to get a relatively small amount of money, but how much can we ever expect from it? What if we double our income? Or triple? It makes a very humble amount now, far less than RIGs or other Gaia virtual items. Can we double what we made in 2011? I'm hopeful that we could. But is that enough to justify doing that instead of something else? Monster Galaxy got into the top 10 games on facebook and I'm sure that Gaia's investors are hoping for an even bigger success from our next games.

In the end, Gaia owes it to our investors to make the best financial decisions. Remember that our investors' funding allowed Gaia to grow from 2003 into the site we have today. Sometimes the best decision for Gaia is to work on zOMG. Sometimes it's to work on a new game. Sometimes Gaia makes the right decision, sometimes Gaia guesses wrong. There's a lot of tough decisions that go into running a business and zOMG has been on the pointy end of a few lately. Much as I'm really sad about it, I understand the need for a company to try new things. Gaia as a whole is more important than any one of its products. And hey, if the facebook thing doesn't work out, perhaps we'll all be back doing zOMG expansions again =)

So sad...I almost wish some company could sponsor the game or something to keep development going, but I guess zOMG never made money for Gaia so they probably wouldn't have gotten any sponsor anyway. I guess Monster Galaxy isn't doing as well as they hoped.
Let's all see how long they stay interested in their next game before shelving it.

I found the Google cache ofpage 6 and page 17 where you can tell that something very interesting was going on, but I'm having trouble finding screencaps (or more details) of the front page.

I wish gaia would make a bundle of items for the cash shop based off of zOMG, then use the profits to fund zOMG.

Oh in a perfect world. *sigh*

I would so learn coding and stuff just so i could help with zOMG, even though i doubt they would hire me. It's one of the best ways to kick back and blow off steam. (Not to mention feel awesome. ninja )

I know, i play it less because of the glitches. x3

I like zomg, just wish they had more of a solo option I get tired of waiting on people and crewing.

As for glitches, thankfully dont have many from zomg. Atleast that I know of right now.

But then again I REFUSE to go anywhere on gaia and post most the time with my avatar STUCK looking like this, thanks to someone's fubar'd coding...for a MONTH. D<
