So, unfortunately my betta passed on to the raging sea in the sky. sad He was an amazing creature and I miss watching him swim, explore, and patrol his tank. I had him a year and a half, but he was a walmart fish and already fully grown to boot. I'm not sure how old he was but I feel like he lived a good fishy life.
But this gives me the opportunity to explore a new kind of tank with a betta not so aggressive cross-species (I know some aren't as aggressive if it's not another colorful fish). So I'm going to pick out a betta that's young, pretty, and active, but isn't flaring at his neighbors. Then I'll see how he does with my snail. If he's ok, I'll get a couple ghost shrimp (Poseidon ate the last ones). If he doesn't chase those, I want two ADFs.
So in total, I want a betta, a snail, two ghost shrimps, and two dwarf frogs. In a five gallon, heated and filtered, is that too much? It's also planted (got a thread in that subforum), if that matters any.

I've got more than that in my 5.5, you still have lots of room xp Can you post a pic of your tank to show how planted it is? The amount of plants definitely play a role in how stocked your tank can be.
For example, in my 5.5 gallon:
Stock:
1 male betta 20 Red Cherry Shrimp 3 African Dwarf Frogs 100 or so Malaysian Trumpet Snails (there are a few other fish, but they are temporary)
Plants
2 Aponogentons* Wisteria* 4 Dwarf Lilies* Amazon Sword* Crypt Wendtii* Guppy Grass Dwarf Sag* Java Fern Windelov Fern Marimo Moss Ball Salvinia Onion Plant Banana Plant
*Heavy root feeder

Are those the tiny snails that explode in numbers? Or are those a different type of small snail?
I'm going to be redoing my tank tonight, as I'm covering someone's shift so I'll have the opportunity to buy some gravel. I'll post pictures when I finish and you can see what it looks like. 3nodding As it is, it's not very heavily planted at all.

They stir up the sand, and keep air pockets from forming and killing your fish. They're totally cute, look them up! I've got some pretty bug ones, actually lol Started with 15 ninja
If its not too heavily planted, I'd go with a betta and 2 or 3 ADFs, and like, a Nerite Snail, or a handful of shrimp. My tank is crazy lol Some times I wonder if the plants actually ate all the inhabitants LOL I only see them all durring feeding time rofl

I have a semi-planted 30g aquarium with 5 female bettas and 1 male wink I'm not suggesting mixing males and females, since in most cases its and 80% chance it's not gonna work out. But in my experiences I find it's always better to add the other fish to the tank first, let them settle, then let the betta loose. It's normal for him to flare a bit and maybe even n** at the other creatures for a little while, but if he doesn't stop and injures one of your other fish, I suggest you take him out. The male I have with me females was in a tank with 5 cherry shrimp and a few zebra snails, he ended up eating all the shrimp and attacked one snail, but for some reason isn't aggressive to the females. gonk Again, not suggesting mixing bettas, but together they make a pretty tank.
