Hey, I'm Thal. My main intrest is Chainmaile and armor making but I also dabble in baking, sewing, and wood working. I am currently working on an improved set of chainmaile so I can sell my old set.

Thanks, I already posted one pic in the "Other" section.

I'm sure I will have a good time, this guild seems very well laid out. a few more active members and this place will be hoppin'.

So I was cutting some rings last week for my chainmaile and my wire cutters broke. Bear in mind these are "heavy duty" wire cutters I am using to cut my rings by hand. Apparently, I have enough grip strength to break hardened steel.

I will post pics when I get them.

Well I finally broke down and bought some colored wire for my jewelry. Here is a pic of a black and gold bracelet I made. I am also working on a Red and Silver one.

Those are amazing! I just got a book on Chain Maile making >W< and I'm so excited to get some rings and start! Can I ask where you get your rings? I looked at the store and found some that didn't look so good. I also looked online, but I'm a bit confused as what to get for starting off ^^;

I make my own. I have a chainmail jig that I use to coil wire then I just cut down the coil. I sell them on my etsy shop too, though right now I only sell one size and only in Galvanized Steel.

If you are just starting out I would recommend starting with a larger diameter ring until you get the hang of it. Also, aluminum is a good starting material especially for those who don't have a strong grip yet. One draw back of aluminum that I have heard of is that if you have a tendency to make mistakes, reopening and reclosing the rings could cause them to break. I can't really speak from experience on this though since I have only used aluminum once or twice on small pieces.

I remember reading about those and the over working thing haha ^^; I was unsure about it, especially since I will be just starting out. I already have the pliers I need, at least I believe so. I'll look for some rings on amazon and practice once I get the money too ^^

Do you need a ventilated space for when you cut the rings? Or I guess somewhere, where it is easy to clean up the shavings would be better @o@; If I am making any sense, haha

I love the look of chainmail and I really want to incorporate it into some of my projects~ ^^

I use wire cutters to cut my rings so there aren't really any shavings or fumes to worry about. Sometimes the end bits go flying though. The downside to these "pinch cut" rings is that they don't have the nice flush closure that saw cut rings have. I would like to do saw cut rings, but I haven't been able to get a saw that is fast enough or produces results I am pleased with yet.

I like the look of chainmail too. I am always trying to think of new ways to use it but I am usually to lazy or too cheep to act on them xd

=w= but we are supporting artists! Artists who are doing what they love no less! biggrin I rather be doing that than some company who would take complete control of their work D:
