So this Bible study is in the chapter John. I'm starting on the 6th entry, looking at John 16:16-33.
If you would like to do the full study, The book is Abiding In Christ by J.I. Packer & Carolyn Nystrom. I will feature the beginning and ending of each entry in this thread once a week so we can all discuss it. I'll put the page number that the entry will be on in this first page so you can easily find it.

Entry 6
"Human beings live very much in their future; things that we expect to happen affect us right now. Christ teaches us to foresee endless joy with himself, and tells us that keeping this prospect on our minds will give us present peace and strengthen us to work through whatever spells of grief may come our way.
For Christians, the future is guaranteed to be better than the past ever was or the present now is. The best is yet to be. The famous tag line 'You ain't seen nothing yet' is always a word in season for servants of Jesus"
What would you like to know (and not know) about the future? Why?
When you consider the future, either in this life or eternity, what is your general feeling? Why?
How do your feelings about the future connect (or not connect) with your relationship with Christ?

How do your feelings about the future connect (or not connect) with your relationship with Christ? Personally I don't really have anything I want to know about my future just because I don't want to ruin the surprise. I will say that I would not like to know if I was sick or how long left I had to live because I feel like it would put a damper on the life that I have left. When I consider the future I feel happy because it's the future, it's something to look forward to. Something unexpected. It connects with Christ because with him I'm happy so I know my future will be happy.

Entry 7
Defining Purpose John 17:1-19
To know that your adored leader prays for you can be an overwhelming discovery of committed love. Surely the Eleven were overwhelm when their Master turned from talking to them at length and with feeling -- about the Father, to talking, still at length and with feeling, to the Father about them. Knowing he must leave them behind in a perverse and corrupt world, he asks for their continued protection from Satan, their sworn enemy for their ongoing holiness and sanctification; for lasting unity with each other, as proof of their new supernatural life; and for them finally to be with him in his glory beyond this world. Clearly, Jesus wants them to overhear his prayer so as to realize that his love for them is not going to fade, but is an eternal reality. Shouldn't we be equally overwhelmed to know that from this throne Jesus intercedes for us in exactly these terms? Discipleship takes wings when we constantly remind ourselves that at this moment Jesus, my Savior, Lord and Friends, is praying for me.
If you were setting out on a complex mission or task, what would be most important for you to know?
Suppose you were able to say to God at the end of your life, "I have completed the work you gave me to do." What would you want that to mean?

Suppose you were able to say to God at the end of your life, "I have completed the work you gave me to do." What would you want that to mean? Praying and then trusting in the Lord to answer those prayers is called praying and believing. Most people tend to only want to talk to God in prayer when something is going wrong in their lives and as soon as the problem has abided they tend to put God back on the shelf so to speak and only pull Him down when they have a desprate need or want. Jesus told His disciples to pray without ceasing and to not worry about the little things in life like food, clothing, shelter, etc.. and used a parable about birds to let them understand that God the Father takes of the birds would He do any less for them or mankind who He loves much more. The thing is with prayer and believing is much like the birds. God will give the birds what they need to nest and to mate and food for them, but He won't put it in their beaks for them. The same is true for us. We have to pray openly and sincere and sometimes put feet to those prayers as well. Yes, God will help if it is the right thing to be doing according to His word, but there are times when He wants us to use some of our own strength will His will to accomplish what needs to be done. So always pray believing and just plain always pray. God wants to have the type of personal relationship with us that He had with Adam in the garden, and He wants to hear all about what we think and feel. So be open and be honest and pray always believing that He will answer your prayers and watch what happens in your life. God bless you all, Ms. Dannielle F. -cck-

Leaving a Legacy John 17:20-26
When Jesus prayed for the whole church, he divided it into two classes: the original disciples, who became apostles, whose message because the New Testament (the true of Christian faith); and everyone else. "those who will believe in me through their message" --- including, of course, ourselves. God the Father gave to his Son all Christians (past, present, and future) to love and to save. He called us all to be one (together) trans-culturally, trans-globally and trans-historically. We are to live out that bond on faith, love, holiness and mission, these are the unchanging realities of out life together. But we do not attempt this kind of spiritual togetherness without help. God himself created s model and so allows us a glimpse of the active bond between Father and Son during the Son's earthly ministry. All Christians share the destiny of contemplating and being enriched by the Son in his glory forever and ever. These are the certainties and fixed points by which we should be living as Christ's disciples in church today.
Suppose you could drop in on your church one hundred years from now. What would you hope to find?
If you were praying for your great-great grandchildren, what would you ask God for?
In the final words of Jesus' farewell, he continues to pray -- this time for his followers of the distant future. Read John 17:20-26
