Now, understanding how to stock your tank and how the nitrogen cycle works can take a little bit of learning... But why is it so hard to understand, "You have too many fish in your tank right now," and, "These levels are so high that it's toxic to your fish"?
There's someone who keeps coming in complaining about one thing or another. She has a 50gal tank with an oscar (which needs a 75gal at LEAST, alone!), some other cichlids, and a couple other semi-aggressives. Every single time, we tell her, "You need a bigger tank, or less fish." Every single time, she acts like she knows everything and what we're suggesting is wrong. So then why is your tank having problems?! And WHY are you coming to us wanting to know why?
A couple days ago, she came in with a water sample. Nitrates OFF THE CHARTS, ammonia problems as well. And she wanted to stick more fish in there. So, we're not allowed to refuse a sale. Guess who came in with dead fish a couple hours later, dripping with sarcasm and copping an attitude like it was OUR fault. Gee, they seemed to be doing well in our tanks, and they died almost instantly upon being put in your tank? Hmm, yep, must be our fault, not yours!
Ugh. Sorry for the rant. I just felt like this guild would be the only place that understood. Like, I get that it can be hard to make sense of all the information that comes with fish keeping, but some things aren't that hard. Example: you have so many fish that it's stressing them out because of lack of space//you have so many fish that your filter and tank's ecosystem can't keep up with how much waste is being produced. Not that hard, is it?
Thanks for reading. sad

People are so stupid. It drives me nuts! It's like, would you make your KIDS live like that?? Does your dog or cat live in filth like that, too? Do you not ever clean the litter box or the back yard, or do laundry or anything??
I know your pain, trust me! Every time some one comes into Publix being sassy with me, I so want to be rude right back. Too bad I like the rest of y job that doesn't involve the customers, and i need the money >.<

Exactly! Or we get the people who come in and say, "What do you mean goldfish can't go in a bowl??!! I RAISED goldfish in bowls when I was a kid!!" Yeah, well, it's like living in a port-a-potty for them. Gross!
And then there's the people who say, "You're telling me, I gotta change part of my water EVERY week? EVERY. WEEK. That's ridiculous." Well, sir/ma'am, you're getting a living creature. They do come with commitments, you know. If you want something pretty to look at that doesn't require maintenance, get a painting. If you want it to move, get an electronic picture frame. Problem solved.

My mom says I clean the tanks too much lol she's right in a sence, but not because I really actually do (i clean every week or week and a half) but because all my tanks are all heavily planted, so the plants take care of my parameters for me for two or more weeks. Makes my life easier usually. But I still try to do it every week.

More selfish, impatient people making me roll my eyes. I'm going to start off conversations with these people from now on by saying, "Oh, but I'd hate to see you lose money, since we are unable to guarantee fish in these situations."
$$ is the only thing that seems to get through to these people, because who gives a rip about the animals themselves. And if I start off that way, they won't feel like I'm targeting them by adding that fact later on. People don't understand, the guarantee is there so people don't get screwed over from buying sick fish, not to screw over the store from people being impatient.
Had someone come in trying to buy fish for a tank they don't even have yet. So I explained exactly what tank cycling is and why their fish have a good chance of dying if they don't set the tank up first. They then promptly disregarded it, and bought six (SIX!) mollies, some guppies, snails, and other fish for a 5gal tank. They also bought NONE of the supplies I recommended (including water conditioner, at least put conditioner in, people!).
Problem One: adding fish to a brand spanking new tank. Fish loss. New Tank Syndrome.
Problem Two: Even if the tank was already established, they're adding too many fish at once for the size tank they have. Fish loss. Too much stuff at once for the tank to keep up with.
Problem Three: Too many damn fish for the tank, even if it had been established and all those fish were added slowly. Fish loss. Overstocked tank.

Holy Mother of God, people are stupid. >.<
I feel your pain, even though I've been out of the job type for about 8 months. It's also why I'm kind of glad that SE Kansas isn't as into fish as Dallas is. (The other part of me is sad because it means I have a hell of a time getting supplies and replacements.) Pretty much the only "decent" setup I've seen, and it's borderline with two filters and three small comets/koi, is the 55-60g at the "fanciest" Chinese place in town. If we did have a thriving aquaria community here, I'd be front and center on getting a job in it, and probably butting heads with a lot of the old farts around here, 'cause I don't know what I'm on about despite having two very well-running tanks with very much alive plants and fish, just because I'm young. As it stands, I don't buy my fish or fish supplies from the lone fish-carrying pet store in town. Their shop is disgusting.
But I digress. All you can do is void the guarantee, I s'pose. sad
And EW. SIX mollies into a 5g? What the flippin' hell? Instant death! Dx Mollies need at least a 30g or more, if I'm not mistaken?

OMG I completely understand where your coming from. Things like that that happen at my work several times a day, thankfully I AM allowed to tell them to get the hell out no fish for you. My store manager sucks and sells whatever but the corporate guys and polices are cool.
We just had a far amount of people come in with bowls for lots of gold goldfish for some type of celebration, got to tell them no also.
I agree its very frustrating when they don't know what they are talking about and feel that they know all and then get pissed when it all dies.
