Got questions about Feminism? Post them here and get it answered by guild members. smile I've seen a couple applications where people said they were feminists but had some questions about issues and I thought it would be good to just have one general Q&A forum. This is for very general questions that are easy to explain in a couple sentances. Here are some examples: - When did the feminist movement start? - Do you have to be female/pro-choice/whatever to be a feminist? - What are misconceptions about feminists? - What is women's studies? You get the idea. If it's something like, "What are your views on _______?" or something that would be good for a major group discussion/debate/whatever, a new thread would be best. (And PLEASE remember to put a poll in any new threads you start. Thanks! heart )

Do you have to be pro-choice to be a feminist? I've always wondered this.

xX~tiny_dancer~Xx Do you have to be pro-choice to be a feminist? I've always wondered this. Not really exactly, but most feminists are pro-choice because they want women to have control over their own bodies, and believe that reproductive freedom will help women achieve equality in the home, the workplace, and in society. Then again, not all feminists are the same.

Mii`ne I am very curious about all of the above's given examples!
When did the feminist movement start? Do you have to be female/pro-choice/whatever to be a feminist? What are misconceptions about feminists? What is women's studies?
Would anyone be so kind as to give answers? question When did the feminist movement start? Organized feminism didn't begin until the first Women's Conference hed in Seneca Falls, America, in 1848. It evolved out of other social movements such as the Abolition of Slavery, the Social Purity and Temperance movements. They fought for issues like guardianship of infants, property rights, divorce, access to higher education and the medical professions, to equal pay and protective legislation for women workers (stuff that feminists today continue to fight for). question Do you have to be female/prochoice/etc to be a feminist? No, there are male feminists and pro-life feminists. Due to some of misconceptions about feminism not many men (and women) identify themselves as feminists. There are also pro-life feminists and pro-life feminist organizations, but as Freedom Fire said, most feminists are pro-choice. question What are misconceptions about feminists? Well, there's lots. Feminists are supposedly angry, man-hating, lesbians who don't shave and are fighting to enslave men and establish an oppressive matriarchy. I'm sure other people can list a lot more misconceptions. question What is Women's studies? Women's studies is an academic field that studies women, gender, feminism and politics. Some colleges have programs in it.

- When did the feminist movement start? From what I see...it became an organization in the 19th century I believe led by many women such as Susan B Anthony. But from what I read, feminist movements have been around since 1200s. - Do you have to be female/pro-choice/whatever to be a feminist? No. As long as you stand for the main purpose (females being treated equally as males in society) it shouldn't matter. - What are misconceptions about feminists? That we are: 1. Going against God, because it is unreligious to be a feminist while being Catholic/Christian and many other religions, because males are supposed to dominate/protect us 2. Sexist, because some "feminists" will say how much women need to be higher because they are "better" than males. But those are just some examples. - What is women's studies? Never heard the term. Does this mean I'm an idiot? Heh..it could be the...well, study of women. Examining their history, how they've been treated, how they handled situations, what movements they did to improve society maybe...?

"Got" sounds so Nebraskan.
Please, let's show we're literate feminists by changing "got" to "have."

Here are two that puzzle me. Do feminists have concerns over issues that men have to face? I mean they also have to deal with unfair double-standards as well. And what do most feminists do for their cause?

Halfbakedcuteness Here are two that puzzle me. Do feminists have concerns over issues that men have to face? I mean they also have to deal with unfair double-standards as well. And what do most feminists do for their cause? Personally, I'd say that yeah, they do. I think if people accepted feminism, there are many ways in which men would be 'liberated' as well. For instance, since women are expected to be the ones to do the sewing and mending, to drop that stereotype would also allow males to do it with less self-consciousness. And the general idea that women are 'the weaker sex' also leads males who are weaker to be called girls, and anything such as makeup, clothing, etc. that women are typically 'supposed' to be interested in would not be restricted from guys. (and yes, straight men do sometimes wear makeup). Basically, anywhere that women are expected to excel, men are expected to dislike.

If anyone has any questions about Women's Studies (as an academic discipline) I might be able to answer them; it's my major.
