His existence is fueled by overwhelming hate towards the keybladers that he believes betrayed him. With this said he does show signs of remorse and pain, but hatred and vengeance is more prominent.
His human personality was more pure. He was a shy and gentle person. He was sheltered for much of his life, and because of this became a naive individual that believed everything he was told. His inability to realize truth from lies often caused him to get hurt, despite this he continued to love the people around him. Backstory●:

Von was a frail, sickly boy with a courageous heart. His benevolence was the reason a keyblade chose him. While he was physically inadequate for such power he trained to fulfill his destiny as a keyblader. Through rigorous training he slowly progressed into becoming a descent wielder.
"I will prove that I can protect them..."
"The light is nothing without the darkness."
While Von saw this as fate finally giving him a single opportunity, their were those who viewed Von with jealousy. Some envious that they could not wield the power of a keyblade, while others saw Von a sign of weakness for the keybladers. Soon it became obvious even to Von what the people around him thought. In a moment of foolish rage Von offered to prove his strength, and take on any challenge.
His foolish claim quickly led to an actual challenge. His mission was to simple survive one night in a barren land swarming with heartless. While the mission seemed moderately difficult, their was one detail they never mentioned. The heartless that resided had grown in numbers, and even keybladers only traveled their in groups. Von accepted the mission hoping that finally he would be accepted upon his return.

It wasn't long before he realized his inevitable death. He watched as all sides began to swam with heartless mindlessly running towards him. There was no escape from this. The nausea in his stomach grew stronger as fear consumed his senses. He fell to his knees watching the world become a blur due the tears in his eyes. Heartless quickly collided on top of him crushing his body. A sharp but brief moment of agonizing pain, and then darkness. In his heart, once filled with love, remained only hatred.
Through the light he saw darkness...he awoke... a Heartless.
