"I'm so excited for you, Raven!!" The sun bounced off her golden curls as Raven's step mother forced her into an unwanted hug. She was acting like this was a willing situation, going to this school with it's strict dress code and high-end snobs littering the decadent hallways. Raven groaned and pushed the woman away, stepping back a few feet and wrapping her arms around herself with a grim set to her eyebrows that matched the bitter downward curve of her lips.
"Where's dad?" She asked, looking back behind Miranda to their dark blue Hyundai to see an empty passenger seat. Not seeing her dad here, despite him being the one who decided that Raven was to be shipped off to boarding school, left a hollow ache in her gut. The least he could do was show up, but even that tracks with his pattern of absent behavior. Acting out was the one way Raven had to get him to look her direction, even if it was all scowls and disappointment, but now in the face of a semi permanent isolation, anger and resentment burned a hole in Raven's chest.
"I'm sorry, Mi Rae," Miranda's face softened to pity, only adding fuel to the confusing tangle of sadness and anger that had Raven wanting to start a fight. "He is so busy with his new project, and he tried to make it, however you know how his work can be..."
"It's whatever." Raven replied dismissively, and turned away from Miranda.
"Later." Raven shifted her backpack to her other shoulder, and pulled her suitcase behind her, leaving Miranda on the sidewalk holding in her ingenuine protests. Raven couldn't stand anymore of her overemotional sentimentalities. Honestly, the woman would cry if an ant got stepped on, and Raven had been annoyed by her from day one about it. Besides, Raven knew she'd be back home eventually; this wouldn't be the first school that wouldn't tolerate her behavior, and expulsion was inevitable.
I'll be home soon enough I guess... Raven thought as she lifted her eyes to the magnificent architecture that was Hollow Bridge Academy for Gifted Boys and Girls.
