Notes for playing Primary Tension: Travel vs Home Wisteria has two conflicting dreams: travelling around the world, a seed on the wind, seeing all the natural beauty the world has to offer, and digging in roots on the coast of the South Downs and turning into a giant tree near Magnolia’s last resting place.
Marked by homes
South Downs Winchester – Payne Mortuary. Julian’s flat doesn’t really register as home but as a living place. Behanzin or Hogwarts.
Character development gives her places to go and people to stay for.
Broken by rejection Wisteria is broken very young by Mag’s death and it’s something she will always carry with her. Wisteria’s silliness is always offset by the grief it comes from knowing and accepting death and rejection. “You are no nymph” haunts her identity, but is also fundamentally accepted as a consequence for putting her sister out of pain.
~You are no Nymph – Every time flames comes up she remembers the fire on the heathland and not being able to actually control it. ~There’s no real rejection of anything. It’s all in the cycle of the world. Mannerisms ~EVERYTHING. SHOULD. BE. GIANT. GIAAAANNNNTTTTTTT.

xxx♣PERSONALITY♧xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx CONTRARY Wisteria is contrary for the sake of being contrary. Sure, she’ll happily do whatever is asked of her afterwards, but her immediate reaction is to reject whatever anyone is saying and be petulant for no other reason than to have a different opinion. She finds complete agreement highly suspicious and believes everyone should have their own opinions. On the everyday, her contrarian nature is mostly exemplified as outspoken silliness.
AFFECTIONATEDespite being a natural contrarian, Westeira cares very much about the world and the people around her. She knows that actions, even small ones, mean more than even the loudest and biggest of words. She also understand that caring and doing means facing the consequences afterwards, however you spin the story. The story matters, but the consequences have to follow for the world to work. ”I did not kill my sister, I put her out of her misery. But because of that I am still…no nymph.”
COMPETITIVE Wisteria loves debates, races, and competing over anything. She likes winning too, but it’s mostly in the name of a good time and people having fun. Prizes are silly. Competition should be fun in itself. Otherwise it’s bad competition. She and Magnolia used to compete over everything, but Mags winning was just as good as her winning, especially since they were both always cheating as flagrantly as possible, helping each other, and sharing any prizes. She doesn’t appreciate sneaky cheating as much, but “hey, if you got away with it, that’s your win, right? Or loss.” She’s not as excited about games of luck, but will still usually take a chance if it sounds fun.
PRACTICAL Nothing should ever go to waste, especially time. Wisteria isn’t a bare-minimum kind of person by any means, but she does firmly believe that a minimally viable product is exactly fine (otherwise you need to change your definition of minimally viable) and that her best effort that meets that goal is good (more is great, but less is not good enough). As part of her respect for the cycles of life, Wisteria is very no-nonsense and straightforward about the reality of situations; a dead deer doesn’t make her feel sad, but definitely somber, and she would want to use every part of that deer to promote new growth as part of properly honoring its life.
INDEPENDENT Scrappy, silly, and outspoken, Wisteria projects a comfortable confidence that is nonetheless rooted in a fear of abandonment. She can be relied on to fend for herself, take care of the people around her, and to come home at the end of the day with a story or topic of discussion. While she’s in no hurry to grow up (besides growing bigger) or to leave home, she sees independence as a point of necessity– there is no such thing as forever or unconditional love. There is always a line or condition. Ultimately she can’t even count on herself, but at least she can try to control herself!
♣♧HOBBIES ■ Exploring nature. Spelunking. Climbing. She has a particular fondness for ruins where nature has reclaimed metal structure or technology or abandoned settlements. ■ Collecting musical instruments, painting them black, and learning to play them. (Current collection (rudimentary for all): voice, harmonica, box drum, lute, violin, the piano at Uncle Nim’s) ■ Taking pictures or drawing (bad) doodles of places and cool things
♣LIKES ■ GIANT Things – most particularly redwood trees, elephants, and whales. ■ Sunny mid-afternoon naps– “I need to photosynthesize” ■ Rings. Maybe a hat. ■ Decomposers – bugs, fungi, the “creepy” workers of nature ■ Spicy food
♧DISLIKES ■ Trash and waste. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! scream ■ Cities– really the whole straight, perfect even lines aesthetic. ■ Being called short/ small. She is BIG RAGE. ■ Shoes – except for her heels (not yet acquired) and snow boots. Socks are an affront to nymphkind. Long pants and leggings are tolerable, but shorts and a dress/ skirt are best. ■ Bland vegetables – she knows she ought to appreciate the leafy foods so she will eat them without complaint, but vegetables don’t taste like anything. If you could make a spicy carrot, she’d gobble it up.
♣STRENGTHS ■ Independent and strong survivalist mentality – Wisteria can be relied on to take care of herself and those with her, and to communicate regularly. ■ Music and plants
♧WEAKNESSES ■ Contrary for the sake of being contrary. ■ Always suspicious of professed love (quick to get along with but slow to trust) ■ The cold! It means shoes and socks.
♣DREAMS ■ Travelling the world and seeing all the nature of the world. ■ Planting her sister somewhere then growing roots and turning into a giant redwood tree next to her. ■ Learning every instrument in the world
♧FEARS ■ One day the headaches will get so bad that her head will explode and she’ll turn into a dark witch or an evil tree rot that consumes and blights without refreshing. Or worse, all the trash will one day pile up into a giant monster that will eat the planet and her with it. ■ “I am not a real nymph”-- there is something fundamentally and inexplicably something wrong with her. ■ Rejection. There is a price to everyone’s love. Maybe if she knew what everyone’s line was, she could just…not do that and people would always love her. But maybe she’ll get that line wrong, or she’ll find some way to mess it up for them.
xxx♣BACKSTORY♧xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ♣♧EARLY CHILDHOOD Magnolia Dawnivy and Wisteria Ostara Vale were born a month before the spring equinox in the South Downs. The twins spent their early lives growing up in a small community of nymphs, learning to respect and care for the world around them before they could walk. They were instructed by the adults and elders of the community, played with other young nymphs, roaming centaurs, and other magical creatures. Even young, they were allowed to roam the chalk hills, grasslands and woods. Every so often they would visit the nearby human town where their human father lived every so often, but mostly they thought of their father as the crow that came to visit them most evenings. Regardless, the twins felt fully loved and accepted in their small community.
♣♧The Terrible Year of 2059
When the twins were almost 5, Mags was bitten by a snake while exploring. By the time the two of them got her down from the tree and to an adult, Mags was pale and shivering. Nymph magic slowed the venom, but the snakebite had triggered an underlying degenerative condition. When nymphic magic couldn't heal her, the father human brought them to a wizarding hospital, but even they could only give her potions for the pain. Wisteria watched for 8 months as her twin and best friend lost weight, movement, and energy. Her hair turned brittle, stiff and white, her skin sallow, gaunt, and pale. Still, they persisted. Their parents and elders searched for cures and treatments. At first, the twins just adventured closer to home and took longer breaks between lessons. Magnolia would rest by the river and Wisteria would run up and down, bringing her shells and crabs. When even walking to the river was too hard, they built a reed sled so Wisteria could drag Mags around when they didn't want to be hovered over. Every treatment seemed to improve things for a day or two before deteriorating worse and worse.
In early August, they heard one of their centaur friends had also been bitten and was suffering. In her first solo trip, Wisteria confirmed the story, and on the way back, went back to the scene of the bite. She found the den of snakes, trapped them in, and burned the entire den. Her plan was overzealous though, and accidentally burned much of the brush and heathland with it before her aunt Cattleya rescued her and stopped the fire. When her mother found out Wis was the one to set the fire, she was furious. Wisteria was grounded, then sent to stay with her father amongst humans. Mags took a turn for the worse in Wis’s absence, and was allowed to sleep over for a few nights. The first night, Mags called Wis into the bedroom crying that she had wet the bathroom floor and couldn’t even gather the strength to clean it up. They cleaned up, but curled under the blankets that night, Mags confessed the pain was intolerable, and she wanted, very much, to stop fighting and sleep forever. Maybe she could be reborn as a bird, but most of the time, her head hurt so much she could not even think of what kind of bird or how to do anything. Wis giggled that if Mags was a little bird, Wis would be a giant tree in which she could build a nest, and they talked until Mags fell asleep.
At the end of the week, Mags told their parents she was feeling better and asked for a trip to the coast, where a year ago, the twins had had the best day ever and met a mermaid. They agreed. There, on a slightly overcast August 26th, Mags asked for a private moment with her twin and soaked her feet in salty waves she couldn't feel. She said again she wished to just sleep and never wake up. Wisteria admitted that she had taken some of their human grandmother’s sleeping potions. “Please?” Wis helped Mags dust the sand from her dress, mixed the sleeping potions with their apple juice, and held Mags up so she could stand as she drank. “Plant me with you.” Wisteria promised. Magnolia closed her eyes, and turned into a tree that immediately withered into pieces of bark and a small seed.
Their parents, seeing the transformation from just up the beach, rushed to them too late. Their mother was beside herself with grief. “You killed her! You are a murderer.” Despite Aunt Cattleya and the other nymphs’ encouragement not to, their mother disavowed Wisteria as no nymph and no daughter. Wisteria was sent to live with their father permanently, and after her exile, he decided to move them across the South Downs to Winchester. While hesitant and still thinking herself a nymph that could not be separated from the forests, Wis took comfort when he petrified Magnolia’s seed with magic and made it into a necklace that she could keep with her until she found Mags another home.
♣♧CHILDHOOD Wisteria hated the human world. She hated the rules of human schools and the rules of human societies. She had always been a bit uncomfortable with her human family: her grandmother Tien was unpredictable and always criticized her mother, and living with her meant Wis never knew if she would be doting and making delicious food to share or critical and raging at something. Her arrière-grand-mère unnerved her, seeing through her rather than at her. Her aunt Tambrey was strict and condescending, but at least she was straightforward. Surprisingly, Wisteria thought her father seemed the only sane human. He was stern but never upset at her, showed her art and different foods, and would patiently turn into a crow when she didn’t want to talk to him as a human.
Finally, Wisteria found the nearby cemetery. She was caught climbing a tree by the son of the mortician and funeral home director, Uriel Payne, but got along with him very well. She decided he was her favorite human, and despite the protests of a local ghost, decided she would marry him and take over the mortuary. She admired his sister, Moira, on sight as well, and thought all was better until noticing her dad and Moira getting friendly. ♣♧SCHOOL YEARS

Yer post is gonna go here. Words. Descriptions. Let us know what your character is thinking and feeling. Let us know what's going on with their senses. Put yourself in their shoes. "Oh, and sometimes your character will say stuff. That'll go here," they say. And then maybe you'll say why they said that, or how they felt as they said that. Thinking is also good. Anyone ever tell you to think before you speak? Exactly.
