Sometimes it bugged her, the mask that was more of a face then she was sure his actual face would be. She couldn't tell what he was feeling, even when his voice changed. It was that damn painted smile. She doubted Guy Fawkes actually was smiling when he tried to blow up parliament. Somehow it didn't fit.

And when the mask wasn't bugging her, it confused her. How could anyone stand to hide behind a mask like that? Was it some kind of statement about the mask other people wore, or was it something else? If she had to bet, she'd say it was a little of both.

There was something scary about not being able to tell where he was looking that really bugged her. She would rather he didn't look in her direction, because at least she didn't have to wonder what he was looking at on her body. But even so she knew better then to think he was perverted like that. He wouldn't do that to her.

Two weeks of living with him and she started to find the painted smile to be his lie. She doubted he smiled more then four times in his whole life. He didn't seem the smiling type. Did she make him smile? Sometimes she wished she could. She wondered what his laugh sounded like. She wondered what was really behind the mask.

Years later, her mind would burn with his image in her sleep. Years later, the painted smile would be more real then anything to her. She feel in love with the man... with the mask... with the smile she knew wasn't real. But she liked to think it was. She liked to think he smiled just for her... and maybe he did. Anythings possible... right?
