Great advice.
However I dissaggree slightly with the "Avoid" Section. I concur with the avoiding Squiers, store brands, etc, but not with the Fenders. Sure, there are some lower end Standard Fenders that don't meet up to the hype, but that doesn't mean they're not good basses. The problem Fender has is that they're always compared to Gibson. The fact of the matter is, no, most Fenders aren't going to be ibson quality - Fenders were meant originally to be the working man's guitar. However if your just starting it's doubtful you'll be picking up even a standard P-bass as your first, so by the time you do start thinking about step-ups, you'll be able to pick out the good Fenders from the lot.
That's my stand. I like Fender guitars and basses... smile

Especially the red and white one that goes from the top of the headstock to the bottom of the body.) and I only found a few that I liked (Aerodyne Tele (Guitar), Aerodyne Jazz Bass, Marcus Miller Signature (4 & 5 string), Flat Head Tele and Tele 51' Reisssue. Best Bass brands are ESP, Warwick, Ibanez, BCRich (NJ Series) and Dean. I think if you want good qualitiy and sound Warwick has your back (You need the money for one though cause they are kinda expensive compared to others.). If your looking for a cheap one then go with ESP or Ibanez (Good qualitiy from Japan and sound is very awsome.). The one brand of bass that I like which some people hate is the Ernie Ball basses. They sound and feel nice but I cant stand sitting down with one.

Pedulla is another good brand to look into, they're handmade, though. So expect them to be expensive.
I'd kill someone for a rapture, though.

I have a Squire, it was all I could afford. But for the price, I think it's a pretty good bass.

You guys are f**kin idiots fender is a great brande but when you walk into a store and try a fender they are brande new try going to a pawn shop or tryinfg older fenders because they get much better even after a few months of playing it ragualarely they just need to be broken into.

So, I was bored and decided to unlock this topic, I think an Ibenaz bass would be a good starting bass.

My first bass was an ESP F-104, and I bought a nice cheap Rogue acoustic just to play around with, but it's proven to be fairly nice for a store brand. I recommend the ESP as a good first bass, it will last you longer before you outgrow it, and they sound great with a price under $300. I would also recommend getting a ten or fifteen watt amp instead of a crappy practice amp because sooner or later, you are going to want it louder and blow the practice amp. ALSO: If you get a ten or fifteen watt amp instead of a practice amp, break it in on low volume for a few days before you turn it up, that way there is no chance of overdoing it and screwing up a new amp.
