What? How can a cat get AIDS? AIDS is strictly a human virus. Someone fill me in. confused

AIDS originated in monkeys.
Monkeys aren't humans.
So, um...
Maybe monkeys sleep around?
sweatdrop
This is getting awkward...

I am saddend that your school's did not teach
you about inter-mammal aids.

As fare as I know Cats, Humans, Dogs, Chimpazies (sp?),
are at risk to contract the A.I.D.S. Virus.

I had a virus a few years back. Thyroid...I nearlly died eek

Unfortunately, my very cute cat is doomed to die slowly and painfully over the course of about a decade because medical companies are keeping the cure for AIDS hidden from the public; there's not a lot of money to be made from a natural cure for a disease (and, therefore, cannot be patented).

Oh no, wait, that's the cure for cancer. My bad. There is no cure for AIDS.

Strangely enough, humans can't contract HIV from cats.......but I'm fairly certain AIDS found its way into the human gene pool from the monkeys, which makes me wonder: Was this the result of some unfortunate science lab accident or something far more perverse?

[virologist]

Excuse me, but AIDS is not a virus - and HIV does not infect monkeys. I know, you're all thinking I'm crazy now, or stupid, but hear me out:

1) AIDS is not a virus. It stands for "Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome" and is the disease caused by immunodeficiency viruses.

2) HIV is the virus that causes AIDS in humans - it stands for "Human Immunodeficiency Virus." In monkeys (simians) it's SIV; in cats (felines) it's FIV. SIV is probably the one that mutated to become HIV.

Therefore, cats can get AIDS, but from a different (but related) virus than the one that causes it in humans.

My oldest cat has diabetes. She used to be a fat cat, but now she's a bony blob of skin. I have to give her insulene (sp?) shots and change her diet.

Heh... I'd post a picture if I had one.
