I'd noticed a couple of people had mentioned it but nobody's really said much about Althalus so:

Do you like Althalus (as in the book)? What are your favourite parts/ characters? What are your least favourite parts/characters?

I started reading it, but got really bored after he left the house and started gathering the people. They all reminded me too much of the characters from Bel/Mal. I'll try reading it again later.

I liked the book, but I probably wouldn't read it again. xd
The characters, as mentioned, were far too similar to those in the Belgariad, and the story seemed to drag on for far too long. There were interesting parts, I remember, but none really worth commenting on...

I liked the book a lot. I literarily wore the book to shreds. Literarily. I have the tatterred cover somewhere.

I liked Althalus, he seemed like a blend of Belgarath and Talen, the differences of both boiled into one.

I really liked Althalus, although it did get a little tedious at times. I thought that the characters were more like the ones from the Tamuli and Elenium than the Belgariad and Mallorean, but I guess Althalus and Belgarath have similarities. I did like the beginning before he went to the house, and when he got there, and when they kept going through time to re-jig everything. Very enjoyable, but waaayyyy too many characters to acutal remember all of their names

i agree about the excessive amount of characters it's way too confusing eek
i'd never thought about althalus being like belgarath but he is now i come to think of it

I've read the redemption of Althalus several times, as I have most of David and Leigh Eddings' works.

The plot is similar, the characters are similar, but the actual story itself reads quite differently smile

I remember really liking Althalus when I read it way back in high school, but when I read it again recently I couldn't get through it. Some parts dragged on a little too much, there were a few too many characters, and some plot points kept repeating themselves (as did some of the characters actually), so I gave up about halfway through.

I quite like the concept though, and I could have been having a bad day. I'm definately going to try and read it again sometime, because I remember quite liking it.

I liked the very beginning where everything is going wrong for him. Especially when he doesn't recognize the paper money.

I would have to agree that's one of the best parts. I loved the book, some parts were a little boring and the whole house concept is a bit baffling, but the story itself is still rather enjoyable.

The characters were a blatant cannibalizing of the Belgariad, but I did love Beid. Eddings actually managed to write a cleric different from his others. Relg and Olivier or whatever his name is from the Elenium are almost the same guy, Beid is a fascinating mixture of self-flagellation and endearing cynicism. He's what would happen if Silk, Relg, and that really charming guy (a baron?) from the Elenium all somehow had a baby together, which is a definite improvement on the mind-blowing sameness of the rest of the cast.
