Well?
  This decision is flawless
This decision needs reworking, because teenagers also get pregnant and may need EC
This decision is bullshit, because I do not support EC, no matter what the age
I r teh misinformed about EC and hate it because I think it is just like the abortion pill, RU-486!!!!!!!!!!112

Plan B: A Semi-Sweet Victory

The Nation
Fri Aug 25, 2:15 PM ET

The Nation -- The Food and Drug Administration finally approved over-the-counter sales of the "morning-after pill." Sweet victory, right? Not exactly.

The approval is only for women ages 18 and older, and the drug will only be sold from behind pharmacy counters, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights.

New York State Senator, Liz Krueger, urging the passage of a bill that would make emergency contraception available to women of all ages, released a statement yesterday saying, "If the government were serious about reducing unintended pregnancies, they would follow the science and recognize that the medicine is equally as safe for those under the age of 18 as it is for those older. This sends the wrong message about the safety of this product. This is politics trumping science."

In fact, the President of the Center for Reproductive Rights, Nancy Northup, says that her organization filed a lawsuit against the FDA alleging "that the agency never intended to fairly consider the scientific evidence that Plan B is safe and effective for women of all ages and that high-level officials engaged in an intricate cover-up that culminated with today's decision."

According to Krueger, "The New England Journal of Medicine reported that as many as half of all unwanted pregnancies may be prevented with unfettered access to emergency contraception, which does not interrupt, disrupt or harm already existing pregnancies, but instead prevents pregnancy before it has been established."

So, while the FDA's recent decision represents some progress in standing up to the Bush Administration and right-wing extremists, the agency still needs to hear that its job is to take action based on sound science, not paternalistic notions of women's health.

Discuss:
* Why the government is interested in allowing women of legal age to purchase EC over the counter, but not pregnant teenagers
* Do you think this will have the desired effect on teen pregnancy rates?
* Can you find the "cover-up that culminated in today's decision"?
* Do you support the decision to make EC OTC?
* Why?

1) clearly, the government does not feel as though teenagers are people and/or humans, and therefor they are not worthy of the pill

2) Well, without teen accsess, there would be no benifit.... Now, if the teens were able to recieve it, then it would be helpful

3) Besides pretending that Bush is the best scientist in the world, i dont know what you are talking abotu

4) Yes

5) If a person is allowed to get rid of cancer, they should be allowed to remove any other cells in their bodies

It just doesn't make sense. Plan B only stops a pregnancy from happening but has no effect on a person already pregnant.

The problem is that clearly, the government feels that Plan B is an acceptable way for adults to take responsibility for a mistake or an accident, but not for teens.

If you're a teenager, clearly the only responsible thing to do is to learn from your mistakes by telling your parents that the condom broke and hoping to God that they buy the damn thing for you. If they don't, it is the responsible thing to do to attempt to raise another life aside from your own before your 18th birthday.

Also, pregnancy.

That line of logic makes no sense. If an adult needs Plan B, it's because they're being adult about it. If a teenager needs Plan B, it's because they're irresponsible and need to be taught a lesson.

I was watching tererun argue this earlier (I cross-posted to ED) and am just astounded at hir stupidity. (Not a typo, I'm honestly not sure of hir gender.)

You want to lower the number of teen pregnancies? Make it so that it doesn't take longer than 72 hours and a potentially dangerous talk with a parent for a minor to get emergency contraception.

They have been for awhile, apparently.
Ask any anti-choicer who believes that "if you had sex you should deal with the repercussions".

Yay! Something (partly) good happens in America.

It's only partly good because people under 18 can't buy them. They should be able too. It's not like they don't get pregnant. And it will probably be more humiliating and destructing not to be able to buy a pill, and having to ask parents or trying to go around the rules. I agree that they should be sold in pharmacies.
