Hi. I wanted to make something serious with the last thread.... sorry for leaving, now I at least have phone and modem. ninja

So, these are the basics of Roleplaying...

1.- What is an RPG
2.- What is a Player
3.- What is a Character
4.- Who solves disagreements?

RPG Stands for Role Playing Game, which stands for something like "Groupal recreative activity in which a bunch of people come together to tell or perform an imaginary tale. Said tale can be exclusively oral, or might be physically acted by the participants; also, can be staged in any kind of imaginary or real world."

So, from it we can take a few keywords that can should be taken out and explained further, to delve into what is and what is not an RPG:

Player
Character
Setting

So, we come to the issue of us..... What is a Player?

We are players.... we come and write the part of a character, and imagine what happens to him/her/it, and post again....

We are the ones who come here looking for one thing: FUN

So, let's emphasize, an RPG is a GAME, in which PLAYERS have a FUN time along with friends who SAHRE some common taste for telling stories together.

There are a lot of kinds of players (truly, one kind for every player in the world), and we might delve into their characteristics, if I can delve that deeply into these threads.

But what we all share is that we are Players, and look for fun.

But now we face the harsh question.... what is a character?

A character is our alter ego in the world we imagine for them.
A character is our way to interact with the story we tell.
A character is a being, in and of itself, which we manage around to do our bidding.
A character is a figment of our imagination, but it allows you to have a good time telling stories.

There are players who create their characters after themselves and realize their very dreams with them, and are unwilling to accept their defeat, as if the character's victories granted the player a victory of his own.

There are other players who like seeing their characters suffer, for whatever dark desire that moves the player's heart when the character suffers yet another defeat.... or when said character rises from the ashes, sometimes literally.

Among those two extremes, characters are created for every purpose and to be whatever their Players' minds can spin into a good enough story to continue with the game.

So, with only our imaginations as limits, eventually, a player's character will be pitted againast another player's character....

so, who rules in the case no one wishes to yield?

THE DICE!

Or well, an impartial (mostly) judge.... every game will name him/her/it in a different fashion, but out of respect to the oldest RPG in game-history, we'll leave it as "Master."

A Master, DM, GM, Storyteller, Overlord, Owner of the Table, He Who Gives Us Pizza, or whatever you might call the role, serves as a medium in which Players can have their Characters come across enemies, traps, plots, and what-have-you, in an attempt to avoid the Characters from killing each other and the Players from becoming angered at each other.

Ideally, the Master also serves as a way for the Players to picture better the world in which the Characters delve. We can all imagine a setting in our own way, so it is the Master who pictures the world and gives out clues (images, sounds, smells, etc) so that all Players can have roughly the same mental picture of the Characters' world.

Ultimately, the Master is a specialized kind of Player, as s/he/it also comes to the table looking for fun.

So, we were lacking the keyword "Setting"

"Setting" will be whatever the Characters' world is like.

We tend to obviate the basics of any world.... there is ground, sky, plants, animals, a diversity of ecosystems, sentient races who build civilizations, Laws of Nature (physics, mathematics, et al).... But they need not be, if the Setting demands so.

So, right now, we'll keep it at "Setting is the world in which the Characters live, and in which their allies and antagonists make their living too. It has its own past, present and future, as well as any unique rules that apply to it, as it is still just an imaginary creation."

The Master, in its role of overseer, is normally responsible of determining any nuances with the world, including its miriad inhabiting creatures and their individual reactions to the Character's actions.

He also has the duty to communicate the Palyers any changes in the Setting and any oddity that might come up.

Summing up:

A Roleplaying Game is an activity in which Players come together to tell a Story. A spelcial kind of Player, the Master, has a greater command of what happens in the whole Setting, while the Players have free rein to make their Characters do as they wish.

Of course we are lacking that keyword "Story", but everyone here knows what a story is.... if not, then go out to play any RPG and make a summary of what happens in it.... the succession of events in the game is its Story.

And that is the basics.... good enough for a night, 2 am..... I'll try to make something more deep and complete for next thread.
