Welcome! This thread is designed to help those of you who are new and inexperienced RPers get the gist of RP, but it may also help those of you who may be older, more experienced RPers and need to remember the basics.

Let's start with a few basic termonology questions:

Q: What is RP?
A: RP or Role Play is the act of creating a person or character and then playing the role that you've decided for them to have in a particular story or Role Play. The Role Plays themselves are the stories that people have chosen to make and allow others to participate in. When you participate in a Role Play you do not have to be yourself, you can make a totally new character, your polar opposite, or someone loosely based on yourself. If you really wanted to you could play yourself but we all know you're not cool enough to actually play with us.

Perhaps you've heard of a few RPGs, such as Baldur's Gate, Champions Return to Arms, Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind? With these RPGs you are taking a character that has already been created for you (except in Morrowind's case where you can make your own) and then playing them out, making decisions that will affect the story/plot of the game that they have set out for you. Well normal RP is basically exactly like that, only with writing.

Q: What is OOC?
A: OOC is Out Of Character. All Out Of Character thoughts or actions (or things that you're posting as You Yourself and not your Character) are put in double parentheses, brackets, or are labeled as OOC:.

Q: What is an NPC/Side Character/Filler?
A: An NPC is a Non-playable Character, or side character. For the large part in written RP I've been essentially calling NPCs Side Characters. Characters that I or another in an RP have made up as Fillers, to help with the plot or give some form of ation. I allow my Side Characters to be played by me and others in the RP, if they interact with others. However, Side Characters normally do not last for very long amounts of time, perhaps for a few posts and nothing more.

Q: What is God-moding or mothering?
A: God-moding and God-mother tend to run hand in hand. God-moding, as it's been explained to me, is when your character is indestructible and thusly god-like. God-mothering, on the other hand, is when your character controls the actions of another character.

Q: What is charri, charrie, or char?
A: That one is simple, charri, charrie, and char, are shorter versions of the word Character. Your charries is the character you've created for an RP.

Q: What does (sp?) mean when someone puts it in there post?
A: sp = spelling. After a word you just type and you're not sure of the spelling, just put (sp?); means the spelling of the word is probably wrong.

Posting in a RP.

Things To Look At:
[x] You should be able to respect yourself (your character) enough and others to Capitalize Your own character's name, and the names of the people you are RPing with.
[x] Work on the way you structure things (Sentences) and use correct punctuation and capitalization. (The first letter of the first word in quotes is always capitalized).
[x] Pay attention! Always double check before replying (or while replying - it helps to type some posts up in Microsoft Word) to make sure you're recounting the right characters doing the right things.
[x] It's best to put thoughts in italics. If you don't know how to make bold, underline, or italicized font you can ask someone.
[x] I highly suggest you always go back after posting and Read Your Post. Try reading it from a different perspective (as someone else, or a person replying) and make sure that it makes sense to you.

Things to Work On:
[x] Spelling - Type posts in Microsoft Word or another program that offers spell-check. If you don't have one use a free online spell checker found HERE
[x] Punctuation - Punctuation ; : , ' " is good. It helps with the flow of your posts and allows people to understand where you're going and what you mean.
[x] Sentence Structure - Some of your posts have been confusing because you mention "her" or "him" and no names and do actions but it's not always easy to know who you mean. Start using proper names.

REMEMBER:
[x] Be - Literate: adj. 1) Able to read and write. 2) Knowledgeable or educated in a particular field or fields. 3) Familiar with literature; literary. 4) Well-written; polished: a literate essay.
n. 1)One who can read and write. 2)A well-informed, educated person.

[x] Using correct English/Grammar/Punctuation/Capitalization/Spelling makes your RP look well... NICE. It's hard for some people to sit there and read 1337, or insert all the vowels you've left out of your words. We don't come here to read licenses plates. Not to mention it just looks sloppy.
[x] Some of you think it's cute, but here it really is not. It's annoying and hard to read through. Words are your Friends. Use them respectfully. You speak English (most of you anyway) so learn to respect and properly use the language you speak.

Creating, Maintaining, and Updating a Character.

[x] Creating a character is rather simple. Most elements that all RPs require in their profiles are:

Name:
Age:
Race:
Description:

[x] You can go beyond just these simple things. You can go as far as their personality, mind-set, personal goals, everything they've learned (magic, hand-to-hand combat, etc) and you can continue to use the information you create for your character and update them. It's even pretty simple to adapt your character to be other races.

[x] Characters can be made off of anything. You can base a character off of your favorite actor, cartoon, villain, super hero, or you can look to pictures for inspiration. Make the most unique and original character is the best though (even if you base their outfit off of a picture you've seen), however I've found that it's easiest to base some of my characters personality on my own, therefore making the character more realistic to me and easier to keep up with and update.

[x] Names: Names are pretty easy (for some) to come up with. Going to school and living in the world we live in there are many [human] names to pick and choose from. Nike, Starbucks, Billy-Bob-Joe, Frank, Earl, Bernie, Kevin, Sally, Katie, Amber, etc., are some of the names we're used to seeing and could easily come in mind. However, for most [fantasy] RPs these names simply will not do. You should want your characters name to reflect their personality, or to work well with who you create to be your character. It is good to maybe go to a translation site and get a foreign name that suits your character. While your characters name doesn't have to mean anything specifically it should mean something to you, and perhaps tie in with part of their personality or physical description. You should create a name for your character that you can remember, and perhaps be remembered by others.

[x] Age: Pick a number, any number (so long as it pertains well to your character). Hell, you could even pick your favorite number, just be prepared to tweak the age of your character for RPs that you join. If you're a vampire, pick a number that sounds good. Don't always strive to be the oldest and most ancient one, but pick a decent number that will give your character the time to have the strength, memories, and story lines that he or she has.

[x] Race: (If given the option) Pick a race that you enjoy RPing and that you know you can RP well. Don't necessarily pick the most "popular one." You can even be daring and make up your own race, so long as you are also willing to tweak here as well.

[x] Description: use pictures to help inspire you if you feel low on imagination. Give your character a look that is unique to them, and will be easy to deal with if they are in battle. If you find yourself unable to properly describe your character just give a link to the picture that inspires you. Otherwise, describe, describe, describe, until your eyeballs fall out. Basically, describe body type, thin, fat, average, strength (how strong is the character, do they even look strong?) Traits they might have based upon their race, skin (or fur) color, eye color, hair color. Any unique scars they might possess. The clothes the wear (if not for most of the RP, of the first post). Anything that makes your character stand out, tell us. But don't just use your profile to tell us what your character looks like. While you're RPing and posting remind us of the hair and eye color, describe to us the way your character looks in action.

[x] Here's a character format you might want to keep in mind while making your characters physical description for their profile.

Name:
Age:
Gender:

Height:
Weight:
Skin Color:
Eye Color:
Hair Color:
Markings: (Tattoos and scars)
Other Features: (Piercing any physical feature not applicable in the other fields)

Weapons:
Clothing:
Armor:
Animals: (Pets and what not)

Bio: (No specific length is needed)

Other Info: (Any thing that didn't fit elsewhere)
