Ok, so there are several different opinions over this. What's too much in terms of the number of strings on a bass? I've seen up through 13 single cord strings(seperate, double cord is like a 12 s guitar) and have played an 8 string. So what do you guys think?

yeah, I've seen 12 strings on a bass. I can never figure out how on earth they get their fingers around to play.

anywhere past 7 is really pushing it if you have 12 strings your probably not ganna use all 12 unless your going for a lighter or heavier sound

I generally stick with 4, but I'll play a 5 if it's well built and I like the neck. Played one 6, not a fan, if you're getting that high on the register, you're invading in guitar world, and that's just not practical in a normal band.

A 5 for me. Started out with a 4, then I upgraded. I like having the extra notes, even though I still use my 4 for other styles.

If you have a bloody 12 string..
You'd be better off playing a normal guitar eek
Hm. I never got the concept of the extra strings. Its like
"Yeah.. I have 5 strings." "Well I have 7 strings!" "Woaahhh you must be awesoommmeee"

I enjoy a good 5 string guitar, and the occational 6. I have played one 7 i liked, not many out there. It really all comes down to the neck, but after 7 it's just too much for me.

I play a 4-string now, but i had an eye on an Ibanez 5-stringed bass (though it's a little bit pushing on my wallet for now), so later i might upgrade to a 5-string. Oh, another thing, is $600+ asking too much for a bass? the one im looking at is around the $600-630 range.

I like a maximum of 6. The 6 lets me harmonize with a guitar when needed but still leaves enough bass character. Ive heard 9+ string players. I usualy loose them amongsts the guitars or get eritated because I hate the sound of anything lower then the low B. IT sounds like fuzzy mud.

I'll only go as high as a five string. My bass, right now, has four strings, and I generally only have to mess with the tuning if I need to go a few steps lower anyway. :/
