Yup I am starting a topic on fan fiction. Do you write it, read it, critique it? What are your opinions on fan fiction in general and are there some gems you've found out on the web you'd like to share?(with a link please and nothing over PG-13 it's against the rules).

I suppose I'll start the discussion off. I write, read, critique AND BETA(proof read/edit) fan fiction. Most of my stories are adult based though so I am afraid it is against the laws of Gaia to link you to them. I write for three shows at the moment, Gundam Wing, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Night Walker.

My opinion on fan fiction is that is generally a good thing. Fan fiction can be a good creative outlet and good start to writing, heck fan fics are what got me started. Also I tend not to scorn writers who write "Mary Sue's" or "Gary Stu's'" as they for the most part are in the learning stages, most don't even know what they've created so it's pointless to flame them. I tend more to offer my assistance and give them pointers. If they decline, well I suppose it is their loss.

Now my lovely Gaians... discuss as you wish ^_^ I've given my two cents for now!

The only fanfiction I get in touch with is Harry Potter fanfiction, which can be really good but also really bad. Sometimes, people loose respect for the original world and create new rules, evil wizards and so on. I write a HP-fanfiction myself but I only read one right now.

They are for the most part and I say if you want to go for it ^_^. I'd say pick one of your favourite shows to start off with. See if there's anything you could think of to make the characters do, a situation you've always wanted to, but never have been able to see. Try even creating your own character. However in doing so, try not to make this original character out shine the original cast, this might get them labeled a "Mary Sue" or "Gary Stu". I think this is all the advice I have for now. I say go for it and good luck!

I write songfics in paticular, about most anything that crosses my radar. I also have a Harry Potter writing contest that I just started to promote. I'm very much against Mary Sues, but I never flame. I just try to bring awareness of it becoming a Mary Sue to the author and try to give them tips...

One thing I don't like about most of the writing contests in Gaia's forums is that most judges never give critique on the entry. They justsay, "Whoohoo! You won!" and leave it at that. I'm going to make sure that all entrants know why they got their ratings...

I enjoy thinking of fan-characters, fan-fictions ^^ But as you may have read at my introduction I'm kinda lazy to write all the stuff I think of down XD Nevertheless... I did manage to write a couple of chapters of Mega Man X fan-fic

I write, read, and occassionally BETA fanfiction. I usually write Naruto or Inuyasha fanfics, but I read ones from pretty much any anime. I can't link anyone to them, because they're over pg-13.

Where do you people write/read your fanfictions?

I heart fanfictions!! Espeically Harry Potter. I've written.. like 2 fanfics. One for Harry Potter and another for Peter Pan razz The only problem with them is that I've written them during the summer, ran out of ideas and basically forgotten about them confused I don't know if their good or not, but if anyone wants to check them out on fanfiction.net. My username should be SummerSoul14. blaugh

I'm pretty much neutral when it comes to fanfiction. I don't write any myself, in any case (I've tried, but I've never been able to get into it, I feel much more inspired when writing about my own worlds and characters). I also think it can indeed be a good kind of 'training', and I will enjoy a good fanfic as much as the next person.

What I don't especially like is (sorry, I hope I'm not going to offend anyone by writing that) when the fanfic is just a sort of 'layout' for sex scenes--probably because I'm not fond of reading those, I much prefer the real thing. wink I find more interest in a fanfic that develops secondary characters, or dives into the 'and if...?' sides of main characters, etc.

As for some 'gems' to share, well, it's going to be very sarcastic gem here, but I've been scarred for life by the Goku x Anne Frank fic I've once found on the web. I don't think I've kept the link, but I'm going to look and see if I can find it again for laughter purposes. I tell you, it was a big "What the...?" moment. xd

I myself don't write fanfiction, as I don't think I could ever do the characters I read about justice. I usually read Harry Potter fanfiction and I'm a member of a Livejournal community called deleterius, which sporks the most atrocious Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu fanfics out there, so I often read various fanfics from there.

As for fanfiction gems ... there's a fanfic on fanfiction.net about the Last Unicorn which always makes me laugh xD The Last Unicorn going on a murderous rampage and then throwing herself off a castle tower has me in stitches every time XD
