So...I've been playing guitar for almost four years and I've always loved listening to bass, so I'm contemplating the option of getting one.

Is it true that to be a good bass player, you need relatively large hands or long fingers? My old guitar teacher told me that I might not do very well with guitar due to my small hands and I was just curious as to what more expirianced players had to say.

I don't think it really matters, aslong as you have good reach with your fingers

I get maybe four inches between my index and my pinkie on a guitar neck.

do finger exercises to help you strech your fingers

My friend tried to play my bass, and his hands are too small to do the easiest bassline I know. So yes, I'd have to say that size matters.

You can always get a bass with a more narrow neck. Warwick tend to have more narrow necks I think.

I'm a girl and have very small hands but I can play to an 8th Grade Level, so while you could argue that you are at a disadvantage it doesn't have to make you any less technical, just make sure you can stretch! mrgreen

The Guitar Center in Hollywood has famous guitarists' handprints in the cement out front. Guess who has super tiny hands? Eddy Van Halen. My fingers are a good inch longer than his.

Look at stand up bass. They are gigantic. If people with 'normal' sized hands can play those, then people with small hands can play an electric bass. You might have to shift your hand a bit more than someone with huge reach, but it won't prevent you from laying down some bass lines and having a good time. *shrug*

I don't think size matters, but if you really do have small hands, then you could always opt to get a bass with a shorter scale.
But really, I don't think it matters if you practice enough.

I'd say I have to agree with....well, pretty much everyone on this thread. Yes, you may have to compensate for having a shorter reach, but small hands do not prevent you from being good at bass. You can easily train yourself to simply move your hand quickly to frets that are far away.
