in keeping with the obsessions that most people have, now we discuss pets...
now, i know not everyone has or loves pets, but most people do, or atleast can appreciate other's interests, so let's have at it. discuss pets you've had, pets you have, pets you want, etc. post up some pictures if you want, whatever. this being a sticky, let's stay on topic, but otherwise have fun with it!

so, how many aquarists are out there?
currently all i have is one Betta Splendens. male of course.
i think in the next month or so, i will be investing in a 55 gallon tank and getting back into the hobby. at one point i had probably around 350 fish. tho a lot of them were feeder guppies and tuffies just waiting to be eaten lol.
i've kept oscars, jack dempseys, firemouth cichlids, a few types of goldfish, plecos, convicts, many many bettas, dojos, albino rainbow sharks, different gouramis, crawfish, angelfish, fire belly toads, fire newts, different freshwater crabs, etc. etc. etc.
i think for this tank, lots of small community type fish... probably a couple bristlenose plecos, maybe some various barbs/tetras/etc... maybe dojos... who knows...
currently i also have a cat, a rat, and a ball python, in addition to the betta.
other past pets... wow where to begin... of course many many cats and a couple dogs here and there...
degus, guinea pigs, rats, mice, cornsnakes, pac man frogs, a tarantula, think it was called a chevron... not sure, scorpions... had what i think was called an asian golden, and a few emperors... always wanted a deathstalker, but never got around to getting one, now with a baby, i don't think that is the best idea... maybe some emperors, but nothing dangerous now... and i'm sure there's other stuff i've left out.
if memory serves, i have some old pics of various critters here and there, so i'll see if i can dig em up and get em on here.
so what about everyone else, what kinda pets have you had, do you have, plan to get, etc??
let er rip guys!

The first pet I recall was a dog named Fritz. My mother hated him because he acted human, or at least tried to. One night he woke my mother in the middle of the night because he wanted to sleep on the couch, but my sister's work clothes were all over it. She actually moved the clothes so he could curl up on it and go to sleep.
More recently I had a fish. It was a Plecostoma, sort of like an algae eater. All he did all day was suck on the aquarium glass. The only way I could make him move was by touching his nose. When I was in college, my mother almost starved him to death "accidentally," but she remembered in time. I'm still angry about that. We had that fish over three years.
I would like to have a snake next, but my mother is deathly afraid of them.

I would like to have a snake next, but my mother is deathly afraid of them. what kind of pleco was it? you know, i've never understood fear of snakes... or spiders... or insects, etc. ... i mean, it's one thing to avoid the poisonous ones, but to be afraid of every kind... doesn't make sense to me... most of the time you could go in the wild and pick up a ball python, and it wouldn't do anything... and most of the time, when a snake bites you, you're gonna do more damage to it yanking away from it, than it will to you. now, if i see a brown recluse, i'm not gonna pick it up and play with it, but if there's a house spider hanging around, who cares.... anyway, maybe a cornsnake? they come in many pretty varieties. lots of character too, and if they bite, it doesnt hurt. ... in other news still lookin for old pics and stuff... oh well.

I don't know anything more about the fish species. All I know is that it was labeled Plecostoma, or something like that, in the pet section of Wal-Mart. (Visualizing the South Park kids looking for the heart of the store.) All I know about it is that it liked to eat algae and spent its whole life sucking on the glass.
As for snakes, I adore them. I don't know why. When I found a baby snake in front of our house, it actually hid under my foot when my mother came by. Then it slithered into the grass before she could squash it.
As for spiders, she's afraid of them too. Whenever I find one, I give it a speech on how lucky it is that I found it first. Then I carry it into the backyard and hope it doesn't decide to pay us another visit.

Well, let's see. Right now, we have 3 cats. Ash, named him after what else, Army of Darkness. heh. Then there's Pele, she's named after the Hawaiian goddess of Mischief. Trust me, it suits her. and finally Shane, our youngest, named after the lead singer of the Pogues and the resident Village Idiot. He eats candy wrappers, falls off the back of the couch with surprising regularity and is terrified of empty trash bags. We have a few fish. I have a Silver Ryukin named Daisy. I watched too much Dead Like me. lol She's about three years old right now and about to outgrow her ten gallon tank. We also have a cerulean blue Betta named Captain Jack. He spends a lot of his time showing the snail who cleans his tank who's boss. rofl -sorry, crappy phone cam pic. lol We had three Dalmation Mollies but they all developed some sort of fungus and kicked shortly after the algae took over their tank. We're letting the algae choke itself out right now so there's a bright green 10 gallon tank in our living room with no fish. LOL The stuff was actually thriving on the algae killer. Go figure. oh....and I have a pathological phobia about spiders. blaugh A zoo transport overturned near our house when I was a kid and I got to meet an African Bush spider up close and personal when I was seven. It was as big as I was. These things eat small animals for god's sake. So yeah...I'm understandably scared to death of anything with eight legs! rofl

African Bush spider? No problem.
As for the algae filled tank, why don't you put a snail or an algae eater in there? I prefer Plecos because snails just love to reproduce. A lot. xd

The first one cooked himself on the heater. THe second one just turned up dead one day. So then we tried a snail and he decided to hibernate himself to death. rofl The last thign we tried were Ghost Shrimp. They worked really well, and were very creepy-cool but the Dalmation Mollies saw them as intruders and killed them all! eek I give up. We've even tried different kinds of filters in the tank. It just wants to grow algae. rolleyes

My first pet was a Walker Coon Hound. He had the coloration of a beagle and weighed about 110 pounds. We got him when I was 4 years old. He was my baby! No really. He always listened to me over anyone else and I could walk him on my own without a gentle leader when I was 10. Not usually doable with a dog of that size. His name was Budwiser (the previous owner named him such) but we just called him Buddy. He had one of the mellowist personalities I've ever seen with a dog. We used to say his job was to follow the sun across the living room floor... Egads that was a great animal!!!!
