It was hot outside. Ridiculously hot. Peel-the-skin-off-your-feet hot. Hot enough that even ice didn't feel cool, for the few minutes it lasted- Kotobiki Shuya had forgotten what it was like.
The tomboy had been gone for several years; her family had transferred at the end of her elementary years. Through much pressure and harassment, she had convinced them to move back home...just in time for the beginning of High School. They'd secured a large apartment in a complex she knew fairly well; Seiji had lived here, once. Surely he and his family had moved on by now. The thought almost made her sad, since Seiji was likely the only person who would remember the shy girl she'd been.
Not that the feeling lasted, or that she could be considered at all 'shy' anymore. The boy who'd been able to raise her temper from it's slumbering ashes was probably a long ways off, now, which was better for both of their mental (and physical) health.
Her parents were unpacking the last boxes, and her stuff was already put away. With a sigh, she rested her arms on the railing of the communal balcony, black bangs falling in her eyes. The rest of her hair was short and spiked. She wore a skater's cargo shorts, t-shirt, and fingerless gloves; maybe she'd hit the streets later on. Right then, though, it was just too hot.

"Seiji-chi!"
The sound of a woman shouting echo'd out of a door as a figure slid out into the hallway and closed the door behind him. He had a popsicle sticking out of his mouth, looking like the cat who'd stolen fish out of the bowl. He flicked a quick glance toward Shuya, grinning one eyebrow cocked at the new person before he darted down the stairs.
A few moments, a woman appeared through the doorway. She smiled despite herself, heaving a sigh. "... Oy." She dried her hands on her apron, turning to go back inside when she noticed Shuya. "Oh, hello! I've never seen you before... are you new?"

Oh hell no.
"Was that...Komui Seiji?" She asked cautiously, straightening to bow politely to the woman. She was over-tall for a girl, and her modest figure was hard to notice with the way she dressed. She decided she didn't want to know the answer to that question, and quickly changed the topic.
"Yes. I'm Kotobiki Shuya. My family just moved back; we lived in America for several years. We're in apartment 4-C." Unfortunately, she had to be polite and give the woman her name. Maybe she'd be lucky, and the lady wouldn't tell...Seiji.

"Oh!! I remember you dear-" She blinked, looking her over. "My you've grown up so much, Shuya-chan!! I used to babysit you, do you remember?!" She reached her hands out. "Come over here and give me a hug!!"
She scree'd toward her, darting out to GRAB her before she could flee away. "Yes, that was my Seiji-chi. Such a boy... escaping chores to wander outside in the sunlight." She grinned. "He's probably downstairs still, heading to the pool."

Urk. Shuya had to smile, because his mama wasn't a bad person- it wasn't her fault her son was a demon in cute skin. Gah, what a b*****d. She hugged the woman back, letting out a sigh as she sent her thoughts away.
"I remember...It's good to see you again. I didn't think anyone would be here after so many years." Unfortunately, she knew where this was going. It would only be polite to go see her 'friend' Seiji...the little p***k. crying

"Tsk, most of the neighborhood is the same..." She let her go, smiling at her. "Come over later for some icecream, hmm? I'm going to go bake your family something." She shoo'd her to the stairs, nodding. "He's downstairs. If you want, I can give you his cell phone number and you can call him to make sure."

"That's okay," Shu told her weakly, waving her off as she backed towards the stairs. "I'll see if I can't find him...thank you, that's very kind."
Well, s**t. She sighed once the woman was gone, slinking downstairs to half-assed look for her arch nemesis. Maybe she'd be lucky and he'd be long gone by then. One slender hand raked black hair out of her eyes, tan from hours upon hours in the sun. If it didn't happen now, it would happen eventually- living in the same building with Seiji was going to be a pain in the a**.

Sei was sitting at the bottom of the stairs, back toward her as she approached. He was content with simply sitting in the cool breeze'd shade and eating his frozen treat. He was dressed in black cargo style shorts, belt buckles dangling down the sides. His sneakers were checkered print and his t-shirt was black with white writing... something about penguins. His hair was pulled back out of his face, revealing the earring he had in one ear dangling down. Shuya could faintly hear the sound of music and as she got closer she could see he had tiny earbuds in, listening to an mp3 player.

He looked good. She'd give him that much- he could have grown into some ugly teenager, but at least her rival wasn't unpleasant to look at. How he wore so much black this time of year, she had no idea- most of her clothing right now was khaki and white, as thin as she could manage.
She walked down the stairs until she was even with where he was sitting, leaning back against the railing and watching him for a minute. Maybe they'd both grown out of their childhood agression; she toed him with one sneakered foot, expression neutral.
"Oy."

Sei grunted, looking up from where he'd been spacing out. He tugged the ear buds free, letting them drop down around his neck. He regarded the other ... person curiously, wondering what the hell they wanted.
"Yeah?"
He used to wear glasses, very much the nerd in early middle school. Sei had contacts now, tinted slightly to enhance his light colored eyes. His wrists were covered in permanent marker writings and bracelets, some handmade with tiny beads and little hearts (these were made by female classmates, tiny little cute things he'd aquired the year before) and a few with skulls.

"You look weird without glasses." Of course he didn't recognize her, most people didn't; that was the whole point, really. She didn't like the mousey little person she'd been, no matter how cute. Given the choice, she'd never wear a dress again in her life.
Slowly, she looked him over, noting the little accents to his attire and wondering where they came from. He hadn't seemed the type for cutesy bracelets. He was tougher than he'd been, for sure; she had to wonder if he smoked. It had been easy to sneak cigarettes in America, and she wasn't so sure how to do it here.

Sei finished his popsicle, pushing himself to his feet. He came just about even with the other kid across from him- only a bare inch above height wise ...MAYBE. He flicked the stick aside, watching it hit the trash can and drop inside.
"Do I know you? Cause you know me... apparently." He tucked his hands into his pockets, thumbs running across the chain that hooked to his belt and fed down to where his wallet sat.

"Kotobiki Shuya." The name was half-growl, half-purr, and she didn't bother with niceties like extending a hand. They'd had a rival's respect for each other once, anything else would have seemed submissive. Her dark, near-black green eyes locked on him, and one eyebrow raised. "It's been a long time...Seiji-kun."

Seiji blinked, bursting into laughter. "You? You're Shuya-chan? Jeez, where the hell did you go? You turned into a boy." He stepped down so he could see her from both angles. "Damn... You cut your hair."
In equal respects, he'd grown his hair out longer. He thought it was ironic, somewhere in the back of his mind.
"Welcome back." He flashed her a shark smile.

"Papa got transferred to the New York office. We've been there the whole time...he had a choice this time around, and I told them I was joining some reacitonary anarchist group if we didn't come home." So far, so good. Not too bad. If he thought she looked like a boy, no sweat off her back- she liked it that way.
"You turned into a girl. I can't believe your mama lets you keep your hair so long; not to mention the earring." One hand reached up to brush the dangly shiny, oddly eager for contact. Damn. She'd thought she wouldn't need anyone here, but in truth the thought of knowing someone was very tempting.
