Seagulls
I wrote this for a competition on racism, and need help on the details and fine tuning... Any ideas?
No-one feeds the seagulls
No-one
Willingly throws them the last scrap from their table
Or leaves them seed and breadcrumbs for the thrill of observation
No-one feeds the seagulls
Out of spite
Or backward thinking – I don’t know
It may be both
No-one feeds the seagulls
"There are so many" people say
"The death of one will hardly matter"
Thus, a cold heart is justified
Is the seagull worth less for his numbers?
What's to say the starved one didn't have a life; a story; future; thoughts;
Some deed deserving recognition, lost behind a veil of misconception
It seems an unjust fate for doing nothing
Yet no-one feeds the seagull – "It’s a pest” – as though he deserves to suffer
Unworthy of being spoilt like his cousins – the robin, the sparrow, the pigeon
"Rats on wings" they call them, yet they're fed too much, too often
Why does no-one feed the seagull when the pigeon flies home full?
No, the seagull gets no feed, the truth hidden behind a withered canvas of prejudice
"It won’t have changed, it's in its nature"
What do they know of his nature?
"How can past beliefs be wrong?"
How can past beliefs be right?
How can we judge on words of predecessors, when our aim is to disprove them?
No-one’s ever fed the seagull, just as no-one feeds him now
A tradition not corrected, forced on those who have no speech
Let the canvas be repainted
Let our old thoughts be forgotten
Let the seagulls have their feed
Leave them breadcrumbs, leave them seed
No-one feeds the seagull
Out of spite
Or backward thinking – I don’t know
But there is no reason he should starve
