Ryan woke up to the sound of his alarm. It was 10:30am, as early as ever in his book. He relaxed a bit and contently listened to the music he'd programed on the machine. It was gloomy outside, it had been for the last couple of weeks now. Normally, he loved gloomy days, and thought himself much more active then, than in the normally sunshine drenched days enjoyed by most Southern Californians. But at the moment, he only felt the need to go back to sleep.
"Bllleehhhhhh..."
His cellphone rang...the unmistakable tune of some videogame. it was of course of Rockman origin. Even though everyone at the office criticized him for having such a noise, to him it meant a strong will to keep in touch with the kid inside him. He picked it up and flipped it open,
"Mmhm?"
"Mr. Cisneros?"
He sighed, "Speaking..."
"....Mr. Shoemocker says he needs you down at the offices...he says he's sorry to bother you on your day off."
There was a pause.
"not as sorry as I am... tell him I'll be over.."

Kalin had already been awake for hours. Many hours, as she had spent most of her time staring at the concrete walls, neon lights, and drowning noise of the code orange situation at hand.
But that was decidingly much better than the four hours she spent on a plane. Her plans foiled once again trying to make it easier on herself by splitting the flight into two equal hours, oh no... no denver this time.
And so straight from chicago to L.A. with barely so much as the room to wiggle a finger in she headed. And once she got off she shakily walked to the baggage claim. What a maze that was! Her only instinct to follow the people around her.
"Why the hell am I here?" was the last comment she made, bags in hand and waving for a taxi.
And as if to remind her, her cell phone rang.
"You made it?"
"Yes."
"Oh good, when I read the flight cancellations..."
"Switched to O'Hare."
"Good. You heading there now?"
"Yes."
"Good. Remember to speak to Regina, she has the files we want."
Click.
She held the phone away from her ear with a cold glare then hung up herself.
"Land of fruits and nuts."

Ryan stood in the shower with his eyes closed, not because he was tired, but because it was proven to stretch the brains cpabilities just the slightest bit to perform all the normal functions whilst blind in the shower. Afterwards, he prepared a bit a toast, also a good means of keeping the brain healthy, and also brought along a small pack of unsweetened nuts for later.
"guh....well at least the day is beautiful...I hope it rains."
he began to smile, just the prospect of rain always seemed to brighte his mood.
he put on his jacket, his helmet, and set out on his bike. Not the Suzuki he'd always dreamed of. it was a simpler model, more of a beginners bike. Though it hardly perturbed any of his enjoyment. after a few minutes of making sure all was done, he was off.

"Where to miss?"
Kalin sat down in the not so pleasant taxi, listening to the laid back accent of the man in front. Nothing like Chicago, it was always so, cold, windy, and everyone was just so pissed off at everyone else. How appropriate she should spend most of her days there.
"The Fujimooki Topomoko please."
"Right away miss."
They started off, and once again she reminded herself how much she hated traffic here. At least in Chicago the signs made sense, the streets didn't lead to streets that were randomly blocked off with cones, no no... just normal streets that go places that go to other places.
And it was a well known fact that Californians drove with reckless abandon.

No wonder by the time they had gotten there, her blonde hair, was a mess, her suit disorientated, and her face just a bit paler.
"Th-thank you." She said in a shaky voice, handing him the money before attempting to brush out her hair as she walked up to the building. The funny thing was, she hated high heels. At least walking in them, she felt like a camel, but she loved the clip clop sound of importance as she made her way to the front desk.

Ryan zoomed into his parking space and headed towards the main entrance to the large, white-washed box of a building. He stiffled another yawn as he entered the quiet lobby. He began to unzip his jacket when he was greeted by the secretary, something not usually done. He stopped and looked at her, noticing that he'd never really looked at her in all the previous times he'd entered.
"Mr. Cisneros. Dr. Shoemocker asked me to ask you to wait here, he'll be out in a moment."
Ryan blinked, then made his way over to one of the 'modern', low-to-the-ground couches.
it wasn't long before a skinnier, taller man exited one of the hallways, a hand outstretched. Ryan loked at it and smiled,
How human...
he looked up to his face,
"Ah! I'm so sorry for doing this, Mr. Cisneros. I was hoping you'd join me for some lunch. I thought it'd be the least I could do."
Ryan smiled, and couldn't help but laugh,
"no problem, no problem at all. These thigns make life all the more interesting."
They both nodded and exited the building. Ryan made another glance towards the secretary, it was odd, Why does she seem so strange to me?
But it wasn't long for his mind to be occupied with other things. Mr. Shoemaker decided it'd be best to carpool together in his Honda sedan, and also decided to let business wait until they reached their destination. The small-talk that ensued was monotinous enough for him to be able to think about other things, though of what he'd suddenly forgotten.

Kalin had spent the past hour going through the levels of bureaucracy that she admired and arbored of the administration, and finally she found herself in front of a Miss Regina Spector. A manila folder in hand.
"And these are all of the files you've obtained on Dr. Shoemocker during his time in California?" Kalin asked rather coolly, flipping through them as she spoke.
"Yes, everything and anything is in there. Including his budget, staff, and police investigation."
For a moment Kalin stopped through the papers, she thought she saw a name. But she couldn't flip back to the exact spot, and so quickly forgot it. Miss Spector didn't seem to notice though as she continued to talk.
"We do have the agreement though that he will be tried in California court first?"
Kalin nodded a few times, still reading through some things. "Yes yes of course, in exchange for the guarantee of witness testimony."
Why on earth was this woman questioning that now? Had the D.A. not made this all perfectly clear before? Some people loved to push their weight around sometimes... though this woman was something else. Cook country vs. orange county... now that was something I'd like to see. But for now better head this off at the turn.
"I'll be contacting the D.A. here in a few hours after speaking to Mr. Giani."
"You'll be arresting him soon?"
Kalin nodded then broke off the conversation, there were a lot of things to do, not wasting her time talking to this woman who had little business with anything.
Besides, she was only an assistant D.A. to Cook County, and after looking at some of the charges up against the doctor. State court was the least of his problems.

the two of them sat across from each other in a windowed booth at local deli. Ryan was staring out the window, fully aware of Mr. Shoemockers stare.
"I have a proposition for you, Ryan."
He turned his head to face him,
"A proposition?"
"Yes, that's what I said."
A waitress quickly rushed over with two plates, one a roast beef sandwhich, the other, a tuna.
They said their thanks, both amused at the sudden break in concentration. Ryan unfolded the napkin and began placing it on his lap.
"What kind of proposition did you have in mind?"
Mr. Shoemocker smiled and prodded the tuna sandwhich in front of him with his finger.
"A fantastic psychological experiment has been...afforded to me, and I'd like you to be a part of it."
He picked it up and took a bite, still smilling in between chews.
Ryan looked out the window again, his mind reeling at the implications.
"I'm fully aware of the certain extents of your experiments, Mr. Shoemocker."
"-Please, call me Alex"
"...And word has been spreading about just what you have been doing."
"You're new to this field, Ryan, so It's natural to expect some disconcern. But the way things are now, one must get their hands dirty once in a while to get the data needed. It's only for the benefit of ourselves!"
"How dirty are yours, Alex?"
"That doesn't matter. Will you be a part of this or not?..you haven't even touched your sandwhich.."
Ryan looked down, and picked it up.
"How can I accept if you haven't even told me anything about it?"
Alex's smile grew wider.
"Tell me about your past, Ryan."
He stopped short of the bite,
"...Excuse me?"

"All of it is here. I have to admit even I'm surprised. They pulled out all the stops for this guy."
"Mmmm."
Kalin paused, she was now comfortably in her hotel room, sitting on the floor with stacks of paper spread in a very careful pattern across the room. Something had been bothering her, and the lack of answer from Mr. Giani, her boss, had caused the worry to deepen.
"I realize that no one is above the law, and every criminal must be dealt with swiftly, but ... it just seems a bit much. Even for these kinds of...."
"That's none of your concern Miss Showers."
Her head snapped up, looking intently at the phone as she heard that barked out order of his. Fortunately, or unfortunately, she had trained herself to keep level. That took a bit of work, especially working with a man like Mr. Giani. But somehow along the line she learned to work in her own stubbornness with calm reactions.
"Mr. Giana.... I have flown halfway across the country, spoken to people that I do not know, am about to contact Californian authority, and I don't have any right to know what is going on?"
"You do know what is going on. We are apprehending a known criminal."
She pinched the bridge of her nose, her eyes closed as she took a deep breath. "Yes... and why are we bringing out the big guns this time? It seems a bit over the top for a doctor."
He chuckled, causing a bit of irritation on her part, "Let me rephrase what I meant Miss Showers. You do not need to know everything for security reasons. Now get going, you have everything you need."

"That's a very vague question, Alex. And what does my past have to do with anything?"
"How odd that you should be so wary!"
He began to laugh, setting down his sandwhich to take a sip of water.
"Aren't you usually the first one willing to participate in experiments whenever the chance is brought to you?"
Ryan blinked.
Alex's smile darkened,
"Hah, terribly sorry, I should have been more specific. When I said I wanted you to be a part of the experiment, I meant I wanted you to be the experiment."
He chuckled some more, waiting for his reaction.
Ryan stared at him, then at his sandwhich with only two bites taken. Alex spoke softly now, as if he were some older brother, or mentor.
"This experiment has the possibility of saving our entire race. it's the ultimate experiment, Ryan, completely unprecedented in all the fields before us. We'll be greeted as hero's! Hero's Ryan, all because of you."
"And why me? What IS this experiment!"
"Shh shh, no need to speak loudly.
he smiled and drank some more.
"You understand that, as a subject, you cannot know what will happen, any outside knowlwedge could drastically ruin our data."
"How many people are to participating in this?"
"Many..."
"How many? Are they directly related to me? Is that why you ask-"
"- all will be answered Ryan, I just need a handshake, and we'll get started."
Ryan blinked and stared at Mr. Shoemockers now outstretched hand.

With all the proper phone calls made, Kalin was now walking out of the hotel, still wearing that suit, but changing to much more versatile set of shoes.
"Ah Miss Showers I assume?"
The blonde turned her head in the direction of the voice of the man that addressed her at the door.
"Yes, and you are..?"
"Mr. Edwards. But you can call me Drake. Robert has told me a lot about you Kalin."
She frowned at him using her first name before asking, but quickly recovered with a fake smile. "I hope that's a good thing." And then that fake laugh, that made her grind her teeth at the end of the day. These type of people where horribly fake, all looking for some sort of political agenda. She on the other hand was always interested in the human nature aspect of the law, the criminals to her, where much more interesting and worth while then the heroes.
"Oh yes, said you were very bright and determined. Shall we?"
He opened the door to a dark sedan, which she suddenly noticed was flanked by two police cars.
"Yes of course. Let's get this over with." She said rather grimly taking her seat.
"We'll be heading to his office. He should be in soon."
She nodded quietly, as the car zoomed off. Her heart was already pounding.

He'd almost cringed as he shook the hand, Alex was obviously delighted.
"So...when do we start?"
They both got up and took the bills to the register up from.
"When I say, 'Go'"
Ryan almost took a step back,
"Go?"
"That's what I said, 'go'. And pay close attention, everything from then on will be the experiment."
"We're going to a lab right?"
They were both outside now, walking to his car.
"Who said anything about a lab? I just want you to relax, and go about just as if none of this had ever happened."
He was now in the car, waiting for Ryan to enter as well. It was needless to say that the ride back was much more uncomfortable than it was forward.
And I'm still hungry...
Ryan thought

The car ride was uncomfortable, well.... that wasn't fair. The seats were nice, lots of room, air conditioning was working, the driver fairly smooth, but it was Drake that bothered her the most.
He just stared at her, even when they weren't talking.
And she did her best to look out the window, counting down the minutes that seemed far too long.
One potato... two potato... hmmm... I wonder how Amanda and Nate are doing .... three potato.... I should take a few days off and stay in L.A.... four potato... wonder if he still lives in L.A.... hot potato.
"We're here."
Kalin peeked out of the window and up to the large building, silent as they came to a stop and walked inside, flanked by a good number of police officers.
PostPosted: Tue Apr 17, 2007 3:33 pm

As the two drove up, Ryan alone was the one to be startled.
"I wonder what all this is about."
Alex was silent as he got out of the car. Ryan saw him and followed suit. The two of them entered the building and saw the small crowd at the entrance. Ryan only saw their backs, and blinked. Alex smiled and waited.

Kalin and Drake had been talking to the front desk, the floor evacuated and the doors blocked, and so the moment Ryan and Alex walked in, there was no way of leaving.
Drake turned first, with a faint smile on his face.
"Ah Dr. Shoemocker, wonderful!"
Kalin turned as well, along with everyone else, but remained silent. For now all of her attention was focused on the doctor, the other man he entered with, small fry. Probably another would be victim, another one saved by the justice system.
And so, the police quickly stepped in, separating Ryan for the Doctor, and placing handcuffs on the alleged criminal.
"You had to have known we were coming sooner or later Doctor. Especially with cook county hunting you down." He gave Kalin a look that made her skin crawl with disgust, then looked back to Alex. "Unfortunately for you, I'll be getting the first swing at you before I hand you over to Miss Showers here."
