So, has anyone heard of Dvorak? I just found out about it a while ago, thought I'd share the news.

It's a keyboard layout, an alternative to the typical QWERTY one.

People always told me that the keys were arranged to help you type faster, which I never really believed. Apparently, it was designed to keep typewriter keys from jamming, by making you type slower and keeping you alternating between different sides and such.

So, that kinda told me why I've never been a good typist. (I do the 'hunt and peck', as it's called. XD)

Anyway, most computers can be switched to a different layout, the Dvorak one. It's designed to help you type faster and alleviate any repetitive stress injuries. And it's free and easy to switch, though your keyboard will still be labelled QWERTY, so it might take awhile to get use to.

Does anyone else get sore or stiff fingers and wrists after long bouts of typing? Mine were almost always killing me.

I just thought someone might like to know. Just keep in mind that once you start learning, it's a bit hard to go back to QWERTY, though it can be done.

I got all of my info here, if you're curious and would like to check it out.

Yup, I've heard of them. My brother-in-law tells a story about a friend of a friend or some such thing who was helping a little old lady move and found a typewriter in the attic. He asked her about it because he said it looked really odd with the keys all mixed up in places other than the usual locations. She said it was her husband's typewriter, that he'd invented it. It was the original Dvorak typewriter...her husband was Dvorak.

My nephew has switched to Dvorak. He put stickers on the keys, or some such thing, and he borrowed my OLD (15 years old or so) Typing Tutor program that had an option for learning Dvorak style typing. I guess he likes it. Maybe I should give it a try since my body is getting so messed up from all the typing I do? My right hand is a wreck. sad

Meep! Sorry I've been gone so long. Anyway.

Yeah, I really love Dvorak. My wrists are doing sooo much better. I love it especially because all of the vowels are in the same place, which makes it somewhat easier to adjust to, as well.

But yeah, it's really easy to switch, and if you don't like it when you start out, no harm done; you can switch right back.
