Learning a Language
Think your Vale would be interesting in learning a new language? Perhaps they have a fancy for the romance languages, such as French, German or Italian, or perhaps they desire the languages of the Middle East, like Arabic, Farsi or Hebrew. Are oriental languages your Vale’s interest? Does the idea of learning Korean, Japanese or Chinese make your specimen’s eyes light up? Maybe a language that is no longer used, such as Egyptian or Latin, is what excites your Vale. Whatever language it is they wish to learn, the ability is now here! Much like the difficulty you face learning a new language however, so will your Vale. If the time and the effort are worth the outcome then please continue reading.

First, what language does your Vale wish to learn? Does the language your Vale wishes to learn use a different alphabet than the English alphabet? Naturally, languages that involve the learning of new characters take longer to learn than other languages and so there is more time and effort required to reach that stage. Whatever language your Vale desires to know we have the books to help them learn. Simply because the language your specimen wishes to learn is not listed below does not mean it cannot learn the language, simply request it to be listed and we will locate the book and inform you of the process required.

What language books do we have to offer at the moment? Glad you asked!
Languages that do not require the learning of a new alphabet:
    • French
    • Italian
    • German
    • Spanish
    • Latin
    • Dutch
Languages that do require the learning of a new alphabet:
    • Korean
    • Japanese
    • Chinese
    • Farsi
    • Hebrew
    • Arabic
    • Egyptian
What exactly does one have to do to learn a new language? Simple. Post in this thread expressing your desire to learn a language, including which language you wish to learn. After you’ve been approved to begin learning a language you will need to understand how to go about it. Learning a language at the Vale, while rewarding, is not a quick process and the further you advance the harder it will become. You may only learn one language at a time, but there is no limit to how many you learn overall.

Rolling dice is how you learn the language you’ve chosen. Through journal entries made exploring the language your Vale has decided to learn. Each group of levels requires different difficulty to complete and there is only so much progress you can attempt to complete in one day in order to progress. Languages that require the learning of an alphabet will be required to learn five extra levels in addition to the thirty base levels you must learn in order to become fluent. This should not deter you from learning a new alphabet, as they are very easier than even the first level of the language.

You may roll either in your journal entry or in the main thread.

Each entry must be composed of several key things. The entry may be any ‘every day’ entry or an entry solely dedicated to learning the language, but the entry may not be only one line of text and a dice roll, it must be a legitimate entry. Entries must include something relevant to the language being learned. Your Vale may write about new vocabulary, grammar, phrases, or even about the culture of the region of the world where their language is most prevalent; anything that shows your Vale is learning new things is acceptable in the post. These posts do not need to be in the language, but whenever you wish to express that your Vale is writing or speaking in the other language you must italicize or bold the text that is being spoken in the other language so that those who do not know the language will not understand. Each entry must also include a dice roll, one hundred sided and one dice each roll. You may only attempt to level up twice in one day and you may roll twice per one entry.
For languages that require thirty-five levels (languages that require the learning of the alphabet) please understand the following system:
    • To learn levels one to five you must roll a dice number that is between or includes the numbers 1-75
    • To learn levels six to fifteen you must roll a dice number that is between or includes the numbers 20-80
    • To learn levels sixteen to twenty-five you must roll a dice number that is between or includes the numbers 50-100
    • To learn levels twenty-six to thirty-four you must roll a dice number that is between or includes the numbers 1-25
    • To learn level thirty-five you must roll a number that is between or includes the numbers 1-5 or the numbers 95-100
For languages that require thirty levels (languages that do not require the learning of the alphabet) please understand the following system:
    • To learn levels one to ten you must roll a dice number that is between or includes the numbers 20-80
    • To learn levels eleven to twenty you must roll a dice number that is between or includes the numbers 50-100
    • To learn levels twenty-one to twenty-nine you must roll a dice number that is between or includes the numbers 1-25
    • To learn level thirty you must roll a number that is between or includes the numbers 1-5 or the numbers 95-100
For each collection of levels you have successfully rolled for you must post here with documented proof of each successful roll. Please understand that if you do not roll one of the numbers above for the level you are attempting you will fail that lesson and you will not be able to try again unless it is your first roll of the day. If both rolls fail in one day then you must wait until the next day to try again.
Form to complete and post to continue to the next group of levels:
    • Observer:
    • Specimen:
    • Language:
    • Current Level:
    • Linked Proof of Each Successful Level:
If your Vale is conversing with another Vale that is not learning the language and they begin speaking in the language you must italicize or bold the font so the other person is aware your Vale is speaking in another language. If your Vale is conversing with another Vale that is learning or has learned the language then after each phrase your Vale speaks in another language you must add in parenthesis the level your Vale is at. Obviously, if your Vale is level 15 and the other Vale is a fluent 30 and they speak in the language, your Vale can only understand half of what the other Vale is saying. Please do not attempt to god-mode out of this. Use reasonable judgment when trying to decide how well your Vale understands another Vale. If we see you abusing this then there will be punishments, such as setting you back levels or restricting you from learning languages for extended periods of time.

Observers, all this is applicable to you as well. If you wish to learn a language simply follow the same process. If you already know a language please post here with what language you know and provide valid reason why you know that language (as well as your fluency level). Once again, do not god-mode and tell us your character, for no reason, knows five languages at the age of seventeen unless you have previously stated that your observer is a genius child.

If you are still confused, please see the next posts for a condensed process explaination and a sample of correct langauge learning process

Simplified Explaination
So you thought there was too much jibberish in the first post to follow? Sorry. You've come to the right place for a simplified explaination though!
    Simple Process:
    • Post in this thread who is attempting to learn what language
    • Determine if the language requires learning an alphabet
    • Depending on the language, begin writing journal entries about the language chosen
    • Roll one, one hundred sided dice for each journal entry about the language in the thread
    • Link the post from the thread in the entry
    • Follwing the above list, determine if the lesson was passed or failed
    • After finishing one set of levels, post the above form in this thread to be approved
    • Continue this process as often or infrequently as you desire until you pass the final level

Rules to Follow
As with any process, there are important rules to take note of and follow. The breaking of these rules do carry punishments, though none of them include taking away your Vale. Faking your levels or entries may result in the loss of levels or the banning of learning more languages for an extended period of time.
Please follow these rules at all times:
    • Only two rolls per day are allowed despite their outcome
    • To progress to the next set of levels you must post the above form in this thread
    • If using the other language in any way, you must post the text in bold or itallics
    • Don't god-mode - use common sense and good judgement when making calls
Please do not actually use the other language if the person you are RPing with does not understand the language unless you translate it for them. It is unfair to the other person, especially if their Vale is learning the language and is a level 29 but because they do not know the language they can't reply.

Sample Language Process
Declaration of desire to learn a language
I am Observer X and my specimen, Y, would like to learn Egyptian.

Observer X has posted their desire for their specimen to learn the language Egyptian. This language involves a new alphabet, so there are an extra five levels that must be learned.
The roll for this post will be for Specimen Y to level from level 26 to level 27. Specimen Y must roll a number between or including 1-25 because they have chosen to learn a thirty-five level language.
    Journal Entry and Dice Roll
    Dear Diary,

I've been learning a lot about the ancient Egyptians. Did you know that they had a huge pantheon of gods that they worshiped for various things? There was a god of the sun and even a goddess of cats. They were all really interesting because some of them had the heads of an animal that represented what they protected. Sekhmet, the god of destruction, had the head of a lion! I can't think of a more fierce animal than a lion so I think a lion's head to represent destruction is completely acceptable.

The ancient Egyptian language is so interesting, I'm so happy I'm finally learning it, and I'm really good at it too! X says that I'm getting closer and closer to being fluent. What do you think? Tay-i djeret tenu? means "Where is my room?". I learned some other funny phrases lately but I think I'll save them for later, what do you think?

    --Y

Link to thread post with dice roll

Y has completed a journal entry and rolled one one hundred sided dice to see if their lesson has passed or failed for the day. Because he rolled a 58 he will fail for the day.
The next quote is a sample of how you would fill out your form to proceed to the next set of levels. In Y's case, his next level is the fluency level.
    Succession Form
    Observer: X
    Specimen: Y
    Language: Egyptian
    Current Level: Thirty-Four
Linked Proof of Each Successful Level: [[Level Twenty-Six Entry]] [[Level Twenty-Seven Entry]] . . . [[Level Thirty-Three Entry]] [[Level Thirty-Four Entry]]

Because Y successfully passed each level, completed all the requirements and followed the rules, he will be given permission from either Kitten or Uennie to continue on to the next level set.
Please note that this is only a sample specimen process. Yours will not take place in one simple post. Each quote box is a seperate group of activities.
