I was recently talking to a few writer friends of mine and we were on the topic of Fan Fiction. Some of my friends think that Fan Fiction is a complete waste of time and not considered a credit form of writing because you're using some one else's characters, whereas some other friends believe that Fan Fiction is a wonderful part time addiction that can help your writing alot because of the fact that you can practice without having to continously think up characters and backstories.

I myself really love to do Fan Fiction because it helps me come up with good storylins for my own stories and does help me hon in my skills.

What do you think?

I adore fanfiction. Ironically, I just posted one of my favorite pieces last night. xD; [Zarya on FF.net] [/shameless advertising]

I started as a writer with fanfiction. It was certainly a great way to start. I had backstories and people who didn't know me and weren't afraid to tell me when something was wrong. But, for every single one of those people there's five who would just tell you 'Nice story! I liked it." and run. xD

I made a ton of friends through fanfiction.net. I became even more interested in writing and took a creative writing class and found out that I don't suck at poetry. In fact, FF.net is where I first met my boyfriend. xD;; [Long story.]

But, you know, I suppose I'm not really one to ask. My life has been pushed forward in so many others ways then just my writing skill by fanfiction. =/ Oh well. It still offends me when people say that fanfiction sucks and blah and that you can express your creativity in other, 'better' ways... Well, where do most writers get their start? A lot of manga artists I enjoy started drawing fancomics. How can you not say the same of many great writers?

I love fan fiction. As to creativity...it's true you don't have to think of the backstory or some of the characters but you still have to think of a story line/arc and it usually HAS TO BE in line with the original, which I think sometimes makes it a lot harder to write.

wink You may even get published in an anthology of fan fictions. Some series have these now...like the ones on the Herald series by Mercedes Lackey.
Crossroads and other Tales of Valdemar is an example of what I'm talking about. So more power to us...the fans who write!

I've spoken to a couple of different well known authors, even video interviewed one on the subject of fanfiction. So far I haven't heard any negative feedback on fanfiction. One of the them, Chris Crutcher [a very nice man and author of Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes and Chinese Handcuffs] said that he loved to write fanfiction as a kid--his favorite topic being Start Wars.

It helps to develop plot-creating, and is great practice. Any kind of writing is practice, essays, fanfiction, poetry etc. It also helps by forcing the writer to try to stay within the bounds of the already created characters, their personalities and their habits. That's one of the hardest parts of fanfiction, keeping characters, well, in character.

Some fanfictions even get published, so whether someone thinks it's appropriet or not doesn't matter, it's a recognized form of literature.

Honestly Fanfiction is what started me in writing, and has helped me become who I am today. I believe it is a good thing that can help newbie writers get their "sea legs" and grow the creativity to begin their own great adventure, instead of just using someone else's.

I love read and writing fanfictions. I'm writing a Harry Potter one right now, and I think they can help develope writing skills; it teaches you to keep to a characters personality and other stuff. And they're way fun.

I like Fan Fic's as well. Personally I thrive on previously made stories and characters. I find that I can mimic the authors attempted personality for the character easier than creating one from scratch. 3nodding

I think your right, it's a great way to improve your writing without making up a whole new story. I can understand what others mean about a fanfiction not really being yours it's someone else's story in the end. I personally like writing it, but not as much as writing my own orignal stories.

I used to love fan fiction a lot, and wrote a ton of it. I just shied away from it. There's definetly nothing wrong with it - it's a great practice for writing, especially when you're writing to work with your favorite characters and situations and see how things would go if you had your own way with them. Challenging your writing skills is always a good thing. I just don't dabble with F-F much anymore. I just don't enjoy it a lot any more. I prefer to be original.

You know, I am not sure I could have put it better if I tried. This sums up so sweetly all of my feelings and ideas about fanfiction... it's a little late but, thank you ^_^

First off, I live and breathe Fanfiction.

But, that aside, I don't quite believe in your support of Fanfiction. Why? Because just because the basic outline of a character's background has been created, doesn't mean that there isn't more developing to do.

And then, when you get into the minor and secondary characters, you find even that much more room to work with. Personally, I love fanfiction because there is all this leeway with which to work and develop with. Rarely are things laid out that you can't add more.

That doesn't sound like much of a valid arguement against Fanfiction though; that it isn't creative writing because you're working with someone else's characters.

They may be, in the beginning. But, basically those characters are just ideas or impressions laid out with certain rules you can't cross over. Any one of your own characters would have the same rules. What you end up doing with them is the same as what you'd end up doing with your own characters.

The only difference in it all is that these characters have already been named and given specific phsyical features and set reactions to certain events.

But again, I love fanfiction because .. anything can happen, with the right amount of work. <3
