I'm curious about everyone's editing process.

things like...

-What ways work for you?
-Is editing easy for you, or is it like voluntarily ripping your lungs out?
-How early in the process do you allow someone else to see your stuff?

or whatev!

I'll go first.

How to Edit. by me. wink

When I sit down to write something, it's usually in a moment of passion. I write furiously, letting everything flow. Almost without fail, as I'm writing I'll be thinking of how awesome I am. Not on purpose, mind you... just that things will feel like they're flowing and connecting, everything (in my head) will seem to be clicking perfectly into place. And because it's such an emotional process, I completely fall in love with it, and have full knowledge of its perfection heart (note sarcastic tone).

However... I know the next step must come.

In order to sever the bleeding passion I have for the piece I just wrote, I'll literally put it away in a drawer for a MINIMUM of four days, not looking at it AT ALL. This allows the emotional connection and adrenaline rush of excitement about what I've just created to die down.

THEN and only then will I pull it back out. My usual reaction is something along the lines of, "uuughghhghghhhh. this is awful!"

the editing process begins!

this method also saves A LOT of innocent people from my wrath. When I submit something I've written to another's hands too early, it's not at all fair to them. Because at that point, I'm not looking for real, honest feedback. I'm looking for approval. and that's never good.

anyhoo, hopefully I'll learn some new tips from all of your stuff too.

wink

I thought the best way to edit is to have someone else edit it,that way someone from a different perspective could give out better writting tips to make writting more enjoyable for the reader. ^_^

I agree! Too bad there's no sub-forum here specifically for editing each other's stuff. it's hard to hand it over to a stranger sometimes. I'd rather be edited by someone I trust to be honest but kind. wink

This true as well 3nodding
Some can be harsh at times, but I agree! ^-^

yep... harsh= crying

that's why I ONLY give my stuff to people I trust. People who know me, and know that I'm looking for honesty, not flattery, but also not to be ripped apart. That's part of why the avatar arena is so frustrating for me sometimes, when people comment the most horrid, rude, unthinkably negative and UN-helpful insults. I just can't help but think, "dude, have you ever worked hard on something and then displayed for the world to take a crap on?"

That's why I think it would be rad to have a sub-forum for editing. People who like to edit will naturally gravitate there, and writers can start to build relationship and trust with them, and know that their work will be lovingly critiqued. You could even have a submission form, to request how detailed or strict you want your editing to be.

I like the idea of an editing sub-forum, maybe then I could get some helpful editing on my stories. Sigh, around my house just getting someone to read my stuff is like pulling teeth and than I just get a grunt or an "it's okay" type of reply.

So, how do I edit. Well, as I go lol. How do I do that? I don't write in one big stretch, it usually takes days to get more than two or three pages written and when I put it down I forget where I am because my mind keeps racing ahead in the story. So when I pick it up again I need to read it to figure out where exactly I am, which is usually where I'm rewriting almost everything I wrote....thus you can see why it has taken more than three years to write 2 chapters of a story I am working on.

I know how you feel, well don't take their comments to heart dear! 3nodding they're just jealous b/c you have work ethic and they don't.
That would be pretty awesome to have some review your stuff and be honest.
Plus you'd creat a lot of friendships from the people around the guild and that'd be spectacular

NO KIDDING! whee but in all honesty, I want someone to WANT to edit my stuff, so that I get more than a grunt in response. wink It's so rare and valuable to find those people in your life!

ps- I like your editing process. It made me laugh. sounds a little chaotic wink , but I know the feeling of getting ahead of yourself so much that you lose track of where you are in the moment. It's frustrating!

yes but with the editors you need to know their style of writing, in some poems poets like rythmes and not a short story that seems to drag on to some. same with stories that is, you need to state what you want to be edited, hopefully that makes sense

whenever i get a story idea, i tell my friend about it and she helps me work out some of the parts. When I actually start to write, i give her everything to look over. She checks if anything doesn't flow or isn't written correctly.

Here's how I edit.

I write until I reach writer's block. Then I go back and edit what I have thus far. Write some more, edit, and I repeat it until I'm done. Then, I edit everything again, check consistency, dialogue, grammar, etc.

I agree... Writing is the passionate part and then you come to the editting and I always fall over sobbing and/or sighing.

I do love re-writing things though...

I like this idea of a editting sub-forum...

Whenever I edit something I have a thesarus and a dictionary next to me. The words are always so comforting...

makes perfect sense! sometimes you have to be straight up and say, "I DON'T CARE IF IT'S NOT YOUR STYLE!!" And other times you have to listen to the editing with the understanding that they're coming from another realm. wink

that sounds intense! what's the longest you've ever written straight, through before getting writers block? I'm picturing you hunched over a computer or notebook, 12 hours later... *L*
