Hey all - anyone have any thoughts on President Bush's decision to (semi) pardon "Scooter" Libby? (For info, here's a quick update. ) Should he have done what he did? Should Bush (as the article speculates) completely pardon Libby? Is the whole idea of "pardons" stupid? It'd be interesting to see if there's a contrast down party lines... Thoughts. biggrin

The semi pardon, well governors have commuted sentences for people before. For far worse crimes the one Libby was accused of. Honestly I think Libby was convicted due to party differences and not legal issues. They wanted to save face and tried to get someone to sacrifice and were only able to get Libby.

So yes the issue of the sentence being commuted will likely also follow party lines.

Pardons may well be a bad idea, the idea that one person can suddenly just pardon a guy for breaking the law does not sit entirely well, however, in many cases, the presidential pardons are given after they have served their time or died. Getting rid of it sounds really attractive, mostly because I can’t see a good situation in which it would be needed.
