The Battalion Bulletin - 1/1/06
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

There hasn't been much shop activity for awhile, which is perfectly fine. I dropped the holiday flatsale and the auction because I didn't want people stressing out about being online during the holidays and whatnot. I kept receiving pms with concerns about little participation, and really, I promise, it's okay.

I've been trying to think of different ways to up the visitor count or participation in general, not necessarily from just tallion owners, but better ways to recruit new owners. I still like the shop, and I'd hate to close it, but I'm sure it's not a lot of fun for you guys right now what with no one to race against. The three options I'm looking at now are...

1) Close - I'd rather not, but if there's no intrest, well, then that's alright. I'd either give you a 3k refund, or grow your tallion to its adult stage.

2) Keep it as is. We'd just keep going along.

3) Merge with one of a new shop. I've been pondering this one for awhile. Angelus is a new shop that, in planning, has a sprawling and diverse world with various creatures in it. This would be a partner shop. You'd all keep your tallions (the species name might be changed), and we'd hopefully get more owners for racing. This version will also introduce the elemental tallions that I was saving, so that's always a plus.

Oh, and I wasn't sure if anyone still wanted that angelic demonic auction. Lemme know if there's interest. 3nodding

Sales
Since we've just had our first growings, and things are goings smoothly what with the new mods and all, we're having our second flatsale! All Tallions go for 3k apiece like last time, and it will be another speed/trivia flatsale. Check out the Market post for more information, and previews of the infant talliong. 3nodding

How it goes...
I've moved to Gaia only recently, and would like to share the delightful Tallions with you from my native land. Tallions are similar to your own horses or stallions, but are significantly different in a variety of ways. For simplicity's sake, we'll call them Tallions though, since their native name is difficult to pronounce.

Battalion Stables is the first facility to bring Tallions to Gaia, so we'll slowly begin to transport Tallions, and only if they have a good home to go to. Wild tallions are imported from my homeland, and usually in groups of 6, including an equal amount of males and females. You can purchase one of these remarkable creatures in one of our sales, raffles, or auctions.

While Tallions make great pets, they are often used for racing! I hope to bring a bit of that home tradition to Gaia after we give a few tallions a good Gaian home.

We hope that you're satisfied with our services, and that you enjoy your very own Tallions!

The Other Half of the Story
From a creator's perspective:

There are so many shops out there that are alike. I wanted to try something a little different. I try to stay away from the extensive roleplay in all of my shops, because quite frankly, not everyone has time for that kind of thing. It's always fun to have a little involvement in how your pet grows, instead of it just going through stages based on a timeline. Instead, I thought it might be fun to use the new dice system, and see if we could get a fun game-type community. It will also provide a way to make a quick gold on the side for owners who race, as well as those non-racers who bet on the Tallions. Just some good, friendly fun for the most part. The artwork will be more simple than not, because I want this to be more community oriented instead of "ooo... we want lots of custom artwork!" This will give me more time to devote to the shop instead of the artwork. It'll be fun, I promise. Just try to hang with us as we get started. wink

Edit: It's also a test of sorts, for the breedable community, to see if this kind of interactive pet will fly. There's no sense spending a ton of time on an elaborate system, if people can't/don't find the time to interact with a simple one. If all goes well though, I willl continue to flesh out the genetics and racing systems. There's nothing worse in the b/c than spending an incredible amount of time on a gorgeously elaborate shop, and then having people not participate.

Life Cycle
There are several stages in the Tallion life cycle. Infant, child, adolescent, and adult.

Infant
This is the age that most Tallions will be sold in. Our team searches the homeland for wandering infants who are without family, which is why we bring them here to give them a proper home, and to be cared for. If they are left abandoned in the wild, they are most likely to die. If you own an infant, and would like it to grow, you need to race it. You need to complete three trial races in order to receive your racing permit, and to grow your infant to the child stage. Note: The infant will not grow immediately. It could take 1-3 weeks for it to completely grow.

User Image

Child
At this age they may officially begin racing! They grow a little larger in size, and their physical characteristics become a little more defined. Their personality also officially emerges at this stage.
User Image

Adolescent
As an adolescent, Tallions can enter into larger, longer, and perhaps a bit more complex races.

Adult
Adults may participate in the most advanced races. They may also breed, if their owner chooses.

NOTE
exclaim ATTENTION exclaim

You may not own more than one Tallion in a particular age bracket! We'd like as many different people as possible to have the opportunity to own a Tallion. At the same time, we understand that it may be difficult to owners with a Tallion in only one age bracket to find other owners to race against. To help both cases, you may own one Tallion in each age bracket, though you may own as many adults as you like and can raise. If you have a younger Tallion ready to grow, but already have a Tallion in the next age bracket, the younger Tallion will not grow, and may no longer race until grown. (i.e. a child won't grow until the adolescent grows into an adult)

Reproduction
When a Tallion becomes and adult, they have the opportunity to produce children. In order to do this, two owners must both decide that they want their Tallions to mate. There are no same-sex methods yet, so the two Tallions must be of opposite gender. Once the Tallions are chosen, the owners must make an appointment with one of the breeding consultants. At the appointment, both owners will roll a die to determine whether the breeding was successful. Both horses must test positive for a successful breeding. The chance of success also depends on how many times the Tallion has had children.

First Pregnancy - Roll one 10-sided dice. If the number is odd, the test is positive. Even tests negative.

Second Pregnancy - Roll one 12-sided dice. If the number is a multiple of 3 (3, 6, 9, 12), then the test is positive. Anything else is negative.

Third/Final Pregnancy - Roll one 100-sided dice. If the number is a multiple of 5 (number ending in a zero or five), then the test is positive. Anything else is negative.

If the Tallion is pregnant, owners need to pay attention to the following.

- After conception, both Tallions cannot race. The female will obviously be with child, and the male will not race out of sympathy. wink

- It could take up to several weeks for the baby(s) to be born, during which time both parents are unable to race.

- Parents can also not race for a week after the infant is born.

Once the Tallion(s) is/are born, parents may decide what to do with the infants. They can choose to keep, sell, or give them away. If kept, the owners must pay a 3k gold fee per infant Tallion for registration. If given away, either the old owners, or the new one, must pay the 3k fee. If the owner chooses to sell the infant(s), they must consult with StallionBattalion before doing so. All sales WILL be made through the StallionBattaloin. We do not allow private distribution.

Other things of note...

- Tallions many only reproduce 3 times.

- After the third pregnancy, the Tallion is also retired from racing.

Types
There are many different types of Tallions, but only the standard, common subspecies is available currently. Later we will introduce other subspecies like the aquatic and aerial Tallions.

There are also varying genetic characteristics, such as hair length, tail length, ear length, feather length, body build, etc. It goes on and on. Eventually we will have a complete list of genetic traits up for you to look at, and consider when breeding.

Getting Started
Welcome to Battalion racing! If this is your first time here, please pay close attention.

As was mentioned before, Tallions are trained to race. They have a need for speed so to say, and need to race in order to grow. In order to race, owners will need to sign up for a racing slot at the appropriate track. Each track is for different types of races, and has different requirements, as listed in the next post. Owners will then show up at the appropriate time. Once all participants have arrived, as well as the staff moderator running the race, the race can begin. Owners wlil take turns rolling dice to see how far their Tallion will advance. The first Tallion to cross the finish line wins.

Example
Staff Moderator: Welcome to Such-and-such Track. The track is 50m in length. All participating Tallions have 10 energy and 1 stamina (all child race) and shall thus be rolling one 10-sided die. First round begins now.

Tallion 1: Rolls an 8.
Tallion 2: Rolls a 3.
Tallion 3: Rolls a 5.

Round one is concluded. Tallion 1 is in the lead with 8, followed by T3 with 5, followed by T2 with 3,. (Tallions will have names of course). Begin round 2.

Tallion 1: Rolls a 2.
Tallion 2: Rolls a 4.
Tallion 3: Rolls a 7.

At the end of round two, we have T3 in the lead with 12m, T1 following with 10m, and T2 following with 7m.

etc.

Things to note
- If two players cross the finish line in the same round, whoever has the highest total, or most meters, wins. (i.e. T1 has 48m, and rolls a 3 for a total of 51m. T2 has 46m, and rolls a 9 for 55m. T2 wins.)
- Not all moderators will announce the same way. Some may just announce in order according to lanes, others by who's in the lead, etc.
- Each track has different lengths, rules, etc., and will specify in the first post(s).

Placing Bets
For now, since we don't have many owners, for all races, betting will be optional. Before the race, the moderator will ask if the participants desire to place bets for the race. Each participant, in order according to lane, will say the max amount they are willing to bet. The lowest amount said is what each player will bet. (i.e. Lane1 says 50g, Lane2 says 150g, and Lane3 says 10g. Bets for that round will be 10g.) If someone prefers not to bet, then there will be no betting that round. We don't want to force anyone to gamble.

After the amount is settled, each participant will send the required amount to the moderator, who will then award the pot (minus fees) to the winner. Fees are stated beforehand.

Later on, when we've grown, there will be races designated for certain levels of bidding, with free races and sort of a "high rollers" race.

Things to Know
- Energy = number of sides the die will have.
- Stamina = number of dice to roll
- Stats can be found for each Tallion in their stable stall.
- A Round consists of all lanes taking one turn, and ending with a progress report from the moderator.
- A Progress Report takes place at the end of each round, and announces how many meters each Tallion has traveled.

More to come...

Pipeline Dreams or Things in Planning
This is all very new, and thus I kept it simple... for now. If all goes smoothly, I anticipate that there will be more complexities as the Tallions grow such as...:

- As Tallions grow, their stats may vary from other Tallions, thus affecting the number of dice that they roll, or the number of sides, etc.
- Track variations, like weather, terrain, etc, which will have an effect on how Tallions perform, as well as possibly have random disasters.
- Items, such as boosts and traps.
User Image

Available Tracks
Neophyte Track - This is the first and only track newcomers with infants may participate in. It's a short race, with simple rules for training purposes. There is NO betting on this track. It's used simply for license acquiring, or just racing others for fun to get the hang of it.

Sedes Track - This is the first standard track. This is no longer training. Only licensed owners with child tallions may participate. There IS betting on this track, should owners choose to do so.

More to come...

FLATSALE OPERATIONS
Welcome to the flatsale. Here's how it works.

1. Decide which Tallion you want. Each has a number. Remember it.
2. SB will post 6 questions, one for each Tallion. You may answer as soon as these are posted. The website for the questions will be posted along with the questions.
3. Answer the question correctly to win the corresponding Tallion. (i.e. question 1 for Tallion 1)
4. First to answer correctly wins.
5. Pay 3k.

For example, the first post is for stable rules and map, second post is for house Tallions, and every consecutive post after that will belong to owners. First stall goes to first sale, second to second, etc. Every additional Tallion you purchase will share the stall with your others.

Failure to comply with these rules will result in a warning, as well as placement in the bad "Wanted" list. Repeated offenses will result in worse repremands, and eventually banishment from the shop, or any shop related events. The rules are subject to change as seen fit.

- Do not steal artwork.
- Do not pm StallionBattalion without checking to see if the answer to your question was already answered in the thread

Shop Affiliates
If you'd like to affiliate, please either post in the thread, or pm StallionBattalion. In return we ask that you do the same, and post our link code in your own shop/thread. We will be checking (on those days when I have tons of things to do, but seem to think I have nothing better to do). Any shops that do not return the favor will be removed.

Now Hiring
That's right, we're looking to hire people. We'd like to hire oustanding, responsible individuals of good character. There are a few different positions you can apply for, though you can apply for more than one. Basically the purpose of hiring is so that the shop can continue even when the creator of SB is busy with real life (omg liek what's that???). Anywho. I hope that this project will take off running, and we'll get a nice, large community in time. Please take a look at the following positions.

Race Moderator: You will be responsible for moderating races. Because we're a small community right now, you are allowed to moderate all races. When we grow, and get multiple tracks, leagues, etc., different moderators may have responsibilities to particular racing divisions so that we may have more than one track going at a time. For now you are allowed to moderate all races though. Basically, moderation consists of announcing rounds, adding up totals correctly for each lane at the end of each round, and deciphering the proper winner. If bets are placed, you will be able to collect a percentage of the pot as a moderating fee. Percentage will be decided later. In addition, you are permitted use of the house Tallions for racing purposes as needed.

The Book: IF, this turns out to be a large community, and we end up having individuals outside of the participants bidding, The Book will be in charge of outsider bidding. You will be able to collect a percentage of the pot as a service fee. Percentage will be decided later. If you are dishonest in any way, your a** is grass, and I'm going to set it on fire. evil

Sales Rep: The Sales Rep will assist in the sales of Tallions. With permission, or as requested by SB, they can help with flatsales, auctions, raffles, contests, etc. This is basically to help monitor the threads for updating purposes, but also to keep the thread alive, among other things. You will receive a percentage of the sales you help make.

More to come...

If you have any questions, ask in the thread, or PM StallionBattalion.

Staff Benefits
- If there is any exchange of money that you help moderate (races, betting, etc.), you receive a percentage (to be determined by SB) of the pot as a fee.
- You may use the house Tallions to aid in sitautions (i.e. teaching others how to play, or perhaps taking up a lane if necessary).
- If you do not have a Tallion, and are a respectable, responsible employee who has proved they are trustworthy, you may receive a free Tallion.
- You get to be part of a loving community. heart

Application
If you'd like to apply for any position(s), please fill out the following form, and pm it to StallionBattalion.

Form
Name:
Position(s) You're Applying For:
Reason for Applying:
Have you had any previous experience that might come in handy (i.e. running a shop, moderating games, etc.)?
References:

I apologize for the formality of it all, but we're dealing with people's gold here, so I'm going to run a tight ship.

Trial Period
Almost forgot to add, if you are in fact considered for a position, you will have a trial period before you are officially hired, where you will also receive training.

I only train/try one person at a time, so if you don't get a quick response to your application, this is why. 3nodding
